I went from Nikon to Sony for several reasons but weight was prominently among them. Just recently I said the 100-400 GM was too heavy and expensive, but I turned around and bought it anyway. I hate when I do that.

I have been using it today and the last couple of hummer post were shot with it. One thing for sure...its not going back.

I have better control over my wallet. When I decide not to buy something, I don't buy it.

You accomplished 2 things. You bought something that works for you, thus making you happy.

You helped keep more than one person working from the factory to the driver of the big brown truck, thus keeping them and their families happy.

You could have kept the money in a coffee can buried in your backyard. That wouldn't make anybody happy.

I do like your hummingbirds!

Humm, did you buy a point and shoot, or a better 1" 24/7 or a mirrorless.... ??? Sony is very innovative... but like the old thing of 1950s people would only buy Ford Chevy... innovative was out.
Beyond being excellent cameras, I have Sony because I had more lenses from the 1980-90's than Mother Hubbard had children. Click they fit my new Alpha so only out the body price.

I always say once you have made a purchase don't ever look back! Just learn it well and use it!

Enjoy your purchase.

When I see the images created with this lens on the A7R3 the weight is no longer a concern.

Joe, I am really impressed with the sharpness of your bird images. How in the world did you get so close to them? I am shooting the new Nikon 200-500mm lens and I can't get that close even at 500mm. I am considering setting up one of the blinds from Dick's Sporting Goods, in my backyard.

Thanks for your tips and by the way, I would not send that lens back either.

I use a blind plus a 42mp camera, 100-400mm lens and crop heavily, often to 2-3X equivalent with the smaller birds. That puts me in the 800-1200mm range at times. All my bird images are cropped to some degree.

My wallet has better control than I do. So often when I decide to buy something (expensive), I can't!!!

I used to keep my credit cards in a coffee can filled with water, in the freezer. Buying decisions did not take longer, but completion did.

Then when I retired, I thawed out the water in the coffee can and cut up the cards, keeping one debit card. Even that was too handy.

Cash or no buy in my current life. So much easier than before... now no bills in the mail.

I used to have that same philosophy but now that I am 70, I realize I only have maybe 10 productive years left, so I buy freely now and tell the kids and grandkids that papa is leaving them some nice stuff. So I'm not worried about bills because my insurance settlement will take care of those. So I am enjoying the new tech gadgets now because tomorrow my iso will be noisy, my lenses will be foggy, my shutter will shake, and my composition will definitely be off.

Thanks for the reply Joe, What kind of blind do you use?

Enjoy it! Love it! There are times to go light, and there are times when it is worth it to carry the weight.
