I've always wanted to purchase the Nikon 14-24, but the inconvenience of the 150mm filter system has held me back. Have any Hoggers tried hand holding 100mm filters with this lens? I've been successful doing this with my 14mm Rokinon using a nd grad and a polarizer. It's a pain, but not enough to make me want to invest in another $1000 filter system and bag to carry them in. If no one's tried this and you have the 14-24, could you please give me the dimensions from OS to OS of lens hood? Much appreciated.
I would go with the Nikon 16-35 F4. Takes a regular screw on filter.

Thought of that, but the extra 2mm and f stop comes in handy for my style of photography
I believe you mean the 150mm filter (by several manufacturers), I have the Lee's filter for my 14-24mm and it is hand hold able. The attached photo was taken hand held with this combo.

Thanks for the replies but no one's answered my original question or maybe I haven't posed it very well. I absolutely do not want to invest in the 150mm system do to high cost and inconvenience of using and carrying it. i have a 100mm system. I was wondering if the 100mm filters were wide enough to be hand held in front of the Nikon 14-24 without the edges showing

I do use gaffer tape a lot of times, to hold filters, that way I can stack them in ways a filter holder does not allow!

I measured the outside diameter of the hood is only 95 mm. Therefore 100 mm filter should just about cover the lens. The fixed lens hood (part of the lens) is not flat therefore you may have to either cut the lens hood cover (comes with the lens) or use something else to make lens hood flat for your filter system.
hope this answered your question.

Thanks THR( hope you don't mind me shortening your name), that's the info I was looking for. I should be alright just holding the filter against the hood without flattening it. Thanks again

I am not sure from your question what filters you would be planning to hand hold. If an ND or ND Grad filter is one of them, it would not work simply because you would not be sealing and filtering out the light around the edges. The main purpose of the 150mm filter system mounting is to tightly seal out all light so the ND filter can generate the longer shutter speeds. Any light leak would defeat the purpose of the filter. If you are planning to hold a polarizer, again I am not sure that would work without a good seal, and also a polarizer would need to have a pretty stable mount to mitigate movement.
I don't know what other filters you could hand hold that would not be affected by light leaking around the filter. I use the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 Nikkor lenses with the Lee 150 mm system and love it. It definitely requires extra baggage, but I am usually a reasonable walk from the car and dump something else to accommodate the Lee system, and only take the Lee elements I need for the lens I plans to use.
I don't see much luck with a hand held 100 mm.

I have used a many filters just by hand holding them with no problems whatsoever, it actually is a good way of doing that, it saves a lot of time, its easy, fast, and works just fine!

The purpose of the 150 filter system is not to seal out all light for longer shutter speeds. The purpose of the 150 systems is that the bulbous glass on 14mm lenses can't take screw on filters so a new system of holding the filters had to be devised. the foam backing on the 10 stop, etc, filters is what seals out light for the longer exposures. I'm talking about hand holding a regular nd grad or a polarizer. I do it all the time on other lenses. Now granted because of the lens hood I might get some unwanted reflections on the filter. I'll just try it and see.

Got it. I own and understand the system. I usually use the Little Stopper, Big Stopper and Super Stopper with this system and that is my point of reference. I don't see hand holding those, and also still think hand holding the polarizer might be a challenge. I guess a regular ND Grad would work if you had total coverage. The problem, as you point out, is that you cannot remove the 14-24 lens hood and it is not a flat surface as you would experience hand holding on a normal lens. Best of success.

I'd skip the polarizer. You'll be dealing with very uneven darkening of the sky. An ND filter is pretty much what your limited to using.
