Lightroom CC Question

Hi,
This is the first time I've posted here. I've recently been using Lightroom CC on a new ipad.
After I have edited an image, how do I transfer it to a memory card via a card reader, so that I can print it out in a store?

Welcome Tim. We will need more info. 1. do you have a computer as well as the iPad. 2. do you have Lightroom on the computer.

If you aren't subscribing to the Lightroom plan then I would suggest you email the file to yourself from iPad LRCC and you will have it on your PC.

Tim, have you tried 1) emailing the image to yourself from your iPad, 2) opening the email on your computer and saving a copy to a file, and 3) copying the image from your computer to a memory card or a thumb drive? Purists may disagree but there is no loss of quality from this process. /Ralph

It would be nice if it was that easy, but im pretty much certain it isn't.

https://www.apple.com/shop/question/answers/readonly/can-you-write-to-an-sd-card-from-an-ipad-via-the-ligntning-to-sd-adapter/QYKXKA799UKCHAJ2F

"Answer is NO; the SD card adapter is one-way only. Ie, you can only import photos into your iPad, not export. You'll need the Lightning to USB cable in order to connect your iPad to your laptop or desktop as if it was a camera, and then use File Manager (on a PC) to transfer the picture files to the PC. If you look at iPhoto on the iPad, the only functions available are to Import photos from your SD card, not the other way around."

Apple decided with IOS to make the file system directly unreadable, android doesn't work the same way although the actual os partition files are read only without having root.
IOS is known as a walled garden and is designed so Applications and Media files are protected. It's DRM (Digital rights management - the content producers not yours).

So there are methods but nothing so simple as drag the files from the IOS device and drop them on an attached SD Card.

The simplest fairly direct method is to attach the iPad or iPhone to a PC or Mac and transfer the files to the Mac or PC in iTunes and then copy from the PC or Mac to an SD Card.

The next method uses network file shares. Commonly these include onedrive, googledrive, dropbox, and iCloud amongst others.
The main issue with these services is that you upload to the internet and then download from the internet. transferring say 5GB of files to one of these services can take hours even with a good internet connection. Downloading can be around 10x faster. It depends on your ISP (internet service provider) The usual service plan has much faster download speeds than upload speeds (generally they boast about the download speed and discretely mention the upload speed). This will usually be slower in practice due to congestion.

There are local network options available, these are generally using SMB or AFP.

"What's the difference between the two? AFP was designed by Apple and is the native file sharing protocol in Mac OS X. SMB was designed by Microsoft and is the native file sharing protocol in Windows. ... There are some under the hood differences and in general your Mac clients should use AFP if possible." Modern Macs are probably easiest to share files using SMB file sharing. SMB has become a universal standard which works. I already had AFP in use on my Lan and had to buy an app iFiles which recognises AFP shares.

Either system essentially works the same way you set up a shared folder on the host system, this may be a PC a Mac or a Nas. A Nas (network attached storage) is essentially a networked hard drive that exists on your network and can be used by many clients running most operating systems e.g OSX, Windows, Linux, Android and IOS. The same is true of a Windows or OSX machine with a network file share.

There are other file transfer systems such as ftp and via ssh but these are not quite so easy to use.

The nice thing about an SMB share is that the file is only being transferred within your own LAN (local area network or your house). Your connection between machines should be much faster in your home rather than pushing files out on the internet and then bringing them back again.

You pretty much do need a Mac or PC to transfer the files to first and then transfer the photos to an SDcard. A cheap old PC might be an easy option. A more energy efficient option might be a RaspberryPI running Linux or even a cheap android tv box that can run Linux, although you pretty much would need a PC or Mac to set them up!

A Raspberry PI in a case can be bought for around $30 it has a hdmi output that can be connected to a TV or a suitable monitor and you can connect usb keyboards and mice. To be fair you tend to use them remotely so most of the time you wouldn't connect a display or keyboard or mouse. They can be used as a media device too , say playing movies to your TV, Kodi is an option.

The Raspberry Pi or Android TV box running Linux can be a useful solution if you can configure it. They both need around 2amps at 5 volts usually supplied by a USB power supply and you can set them up to run their own lan. For example my hacked android tv box can has a 4TB portable hard drive attached and If I want to I can run it for a couple of hours from a usb powerbank.

Normally i just use it to back up lightroom and itunes automatically every couple of hours plugged into the mains. The android tv box is around the size of a 2.5" portable hard drive, the raspberry PI is around the size of a packet of cigarettes. They could easily be taken on holiday.

There are ready rolled wireless network storage devices but they tend to have minimal ram and very little configuration can be done to them.

One last option
https://consumer.huawei.com/eg-en/support/mobile-broadband/e8372h-153/

This is a 4G USB modem, you can buy them unlocked and they can be used plugged into a USB Power supply or directly plugged into a PC or Mac, generally find them for about $50 they also have a micro SD card slot. This can be used for network storage. You can buy a local sim card and use that for internet access in most parts of the world but if you just have your iPad you should be able to upload files from the iPad to the microSD card in the modem and later take the card to the Photo place.

This last option may be the cheapest and fastest option to transfer photos from an iPad, it won't allow you to attach a hard drive to it but it is simple cheap works out the box and is pretty small around the size of your index finger. Even without using the modem its pretty good. In Ireland a 4G sim card would cost €10 a €20 pay as you go top up would give you unlimited internet for 28 days (it's what I use). A couple of years back the capacity of a micro SD card was quite small but they have got bigger. I think the max capacity may be 32GB on the E8372H.

Hope this helps

simplest option for you would be to install iTunes on the laptop and use the lightening to usb cable to attach the iPad to the laptop and transfer the photos using iTunes to the laptop and then transfer to an SD Card

if the USB Modem idea appeals

https://www.tp-link.com/ae/faq-759.html

gives step by step instructions for windows android and ios transfering files to and from the microSD Card.

Why don't you just upload the finished photos to eg CVS over the internet? No need to struggle with trying to write them to a card. Save the photo from lightroom to your photostream, visit CVS.com, and upload from your photostream.

I have a program called imazing. I can transfer files from my iPad or iPhone to my Mac desktop. It also works with PC.
You can try it free here:

No need for any card, *provided* the store has a lightning cable interface on their lab kiosk. These days, most allow Lightning, USB-2&3, USB-C, Mini-USB, Micro USB, and all flavors of flash memory cards.

Call ahead to be sure. Then plug in your phone or tablet and print!
