I am only about 6-7 feet away but inside the blind with the sun behind me. So from the male House Finch's point of view I am inside a black cave. Alas, I and the camera are not silent. His head popped up as he looked around, went back to eating and then went to a different feeder. (loaded with sun flower seeds and further away)
I'm guessing a Pine Grosbeak. Not sure. Could be a Purple Finch, but I doubt it.

Young House Finch. I have them in my yard by the bushel. A lot of fledglings, they keep flying into things and providing my little Jack Russell with chew toys/protein snacks.

Probably, she used to be the birds' friend, she would flop in the sun and they would come to a few feet of her while feeding. Then one day a fledgling flew into one of the sliding glass doors, knocked it self out (or broke its neck) and landed about 3 inches in front of her, she did what any good Jack Russell would do, she bite - "Huh! These things are little protein snacks!" Added them to the yard menu of lizards, field mice and rats.
Tara - official name on licence "Terror" - the wife did it, short for "Little Holy Terror" which she earned as a 2+ lb puppy trying to get the cats to play with her and chewing my stereo wires.

Still not sure, but House Finch seems likely.
All of the ones in my yard are slender, not stocky and have the stripes etc on belly and flanks. The local "Birders" say they are House Finches

Jerry, I can relate. I sometimes thing they look down the lens and see a big eye and fly away.
