I've been fighting these guys since I was a kid. They make their webs across game trails and they're just about 'face high'. When I used to go squirrel hunting, I'd always be looking up, to see where the squirrel was cutting a nut, and I'd walk right into the web. For that reason I developed a 'system' where I"d carry a stick about 3 feet long and wave it gently in front of me as I eased along the trail in hopes of catching the web before it caught me.

It's an orb weaver in the genus Gantheracantha.
