I belong to a club in San Antonio, TX. It is $10.00 year. Membership is comprised of folks with a wide range of skills, from professionals to those with smart phone cameras only. They are super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We meet once per month at a local restaurant and have a guest speaker, or one of the members will give a presentation. We have a monthly photo challenge and the top 3 submissions receive certificates. We also have frequent photo outings in the local area and beyond. We are also given info about Texas and national photography events. As a relatively new DSLR user, I have learned a great deal!

The 2 clubs I've considered joining, one here in Ohio & one in Oklahoma, turned out to be non-receptive to new members. In both cases, no one introduced themselves, asked how I heard about them, nor were 1st time visitors asked to introduce themselves during the meeting. I've been a member of several computer clubs and I'm a member of IPMSUSA, the International Plastic Modelers Society, USA. First time visitors are always asked to introduce themselves & tell what their interests are. Hope your experiences are better.

I had the same experience here in Colorado. When I attended the local camera club meeting several years ago, which consisted of 3 times I found the members stand offish and clickish. Their dues were a buck a meeting per month, which was quite reasonable, however their reception towards me as an aspiring amateur new member looking to improve my photography was dismal to say the least. Thus, I was discouraged and quit attending and somehow found UHH, joining and you folks are now my 'camera club'. I have probably learned more from the very knowledgeable photographers here on UHH than all the books, DVD's and videos I own combined. Thanks to all of you for sharing your knowledge in photography, as it has certainly helped this bumbling old duffer.

Photographic Guild, Detroit in existence for 85 years. One of 10 camera clubs in the greater Detroit, Toledo, and Windsor area. Member club of PSA. $35/year dues. 3 meetings per month, 9 months of the year. 2 meetings are competitions: prints, open color and nature. One meeting per month is a program.

Gives you something to do with all your photos.

I joined a local camera club years ago but stopped going. I have been back a few times to give macro presentations & I have also taken some members out for field trips. I've also judged competitions for other clubs..That said, I didn't care for doing the comps....

I live on a small ferry served island in the San Juan islands of Washington State. I founded a camera club to serve the island folks. We meet once month at the library free meeting room. We have no dues and no fees. The founding members seemed to not want beginner's exposure triangle or "rules" of thirds lessons but wanted to share their photos and learn through the examples of others photos. We have an assignment each month and share our digital on the meeting rooms big screen TV during each meeting's show and tell. We help each other become better photographers as we discuss the show and tell photos. Because of our isolation and zero budget we have a hard time getting guest speakers but there are a few pro (or pro quality) photographers here who will come and talk to us a bit for free. Just recently, I've started throwing some composition classes into the mix. We have taken an e-book on advanced composition and split up the chapters. So that we will share teaching duties one chapter per presenter per month.
We have spontaneous unplanned photo shoots like when there is a good night for milky way shots someone will e-mail the membership and set a time and place to meet. We have had two photo exhibits at public venues around the island. We've become a group of friends with a shared interest in photography. We've had several photo safari field trips to the mainland (we call it "going to America") One was a tour of old barns and another was to a Great Blue Heron Rookery.

I am part of two clubs (one I lead). They are different in what they do and emphasize. One meets three nights a month--one meeting is a guest spreaker, another meeting is competition, and the other meeting is show and share what you have been doing. This club does not do any field trips or shooting events. Dues for this club ar $30 a year. They meet Sept-May. The place this club meets is $25 a year.

The club I lead meets twice a month--the first meeting is a guest or learning time from a member and showing images for review and comments. The second meeting is at a local eating place, wher we have a permenant place to hang images. This meeting is about taling and reviewing images. Every third month we hang new images from members. In addiiton to this dispaly we will have two-three other short term displays during the year at local libraries and art centers. This club also has one or two field trips a month to shoot. Dues for this club are $24 a year. This club meets all year. The room we meet in is free, but we supply photographers for their big events. We do not have competitions.

The point is that photo/camera clubs are different and it is about being part of one that you enjoy and meets your needs. Several memebers of each of these clubs participate with other clubs and meetup groups.

I think Ive told this before. About 45 years ago when I first moved to where I live now I went to a nearby city to a photography club. I thought I might have something to offer being a pro and could pick up something new. It was back in the film days. Not one person spoke or even welcomed me. It was what you would call a click. I never went back. I am the vice president of our local historical society. I love history and we have great programs and guest speakers. I always tell our members if they see a new face be sure to welcome them. A friendly welcome goes a long way to a new comer.

I was having a discussion about camera club fees. His club gets together monthly and is sponsored by a camera store. They don’t have studio access or a darkroom. They have a $50/year fee. The club I belong to has weekly meetings, 2 studio spaces available to members for $10 per 4 hour session and free use of the 3-enlarger darkroom. At one meeting each month we have a studio night with a model & members chip in $5 to pay the model. There are photo contests with critiques at two meetings per month and teaching at the other meetings. Our annual fee is $195 per year.

My question is what does your club have (space & equipment), what does it do (activities) and what does it cost?

I belong to Cleveland Photographic Society. Apparently it's the oldest in the country (125 y/o) I love our club. There is something going on almost every night. They have 36 hour fundamentals course, Photoshop and Lightroom. We have 12 contests per year. There's some field trip almost every weekend, some of which cannot be accessed unless you are a club member. There are plenty of guest speakers, workshops and a mentorship program. Our dues are $54/per year
