My Nikon D3s User's Manual states on Page #99 under the topic of Manual Focus:"AF Lenses
Do not select focus mode S or C.
Failure to observe this precaution could damage the camera."see it here:

Do a google search for
manual override of auto focus lenses in nikon cameras
You'll find a number of articles. The probable reason is that the lens focusing system is engaged in the S and C modes. Turning the focusing ring on the lens will stress the mechanism and break it.
