I took this the other day with my Canon G16. It's one of several I took, but the only one to show this horizontal red line. I've not been able to come up with an explanation, so I wonder if anyone has an idea. This has never happened before. Thanks.

Was any post-processing done to the image or is this SOC?

If no other images have it in them, I would suspect a corrupt file. Is this the original file from the camera?

Its a card write failure, not that uncommon. Reformat your card before using again. If the card is off-brand or quite old, consider replacing it.

It's the original. That file could have been corrupted.

Is this from the card being written to in camera or from the card writing to the computer? I always reformat in camera before I start a job using it. For a card write like this I am glad the D7200's I use have the second slot to use for backup of the first card slot. I was disappointed in the D7500 for not having the second card slot.

I did reformat the card after I downloaded the images. It's not off-brand, and not all that old--maybe a year. I got it at Best Buy, so I hope it's not some knock off. It's a San Disk 16GB Ultra Plus, 80 MB/s. I've never experienced this before, so perhaps the card could be going bad on me. Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered a write failure.

Its a write failure in the camera. A card does not "write" to a computer. The computer "reads" the card and simply transfers the files that are on it. That is why all cards have a WRITE & READ speed rating, of which the write speed is always slower, often MUCH slower than its read speed. ALL memory cards with only one speed listed means that is that cards READ speed. The actual speed at which the camera writes files to that card may be as much as 80% slower.

That's a good question. I didn't pay attention to the image in the camera after I took it. I immediately downloaded the images to my MacBook Pro when I got home, removing the card from the camera and inserting it into the SD card reader slot in the computer. None of the other images has this line, so I have to agree with MtShooter that it's likely a file read error or corrupt file. I'll continue to moniter this, and if I get the same red line again, I'll junk the card and replace it.

That's my guess.
(A LOT better than some file corruptions I've seen!)

A lot of us remember when this would have been caused by a grain of sand/dirt in your camera scratching the film as it moves across! But this is most likely a file corruption - the advice about formatting and/or replacing the card is right on.

My very first thought was that it was something akin to a rainbow.

But your readers sound like they know what they're talking about

Yes, I remember those days. I was always very careful when loading and unloading film, but every once in awhile something got in and scratched the film. And once in awhile the problem stemmed from a film processor that wasn't being careful! I have since fomatted the card and I'll see what happens. If I see this again, I'll know that the card is toast and will replace it with a new one.
