I forgot to add this as well...For fireworks I usually use something very wide such as my 20/2.8D. I would suggest something wider than 50. Best of luck.

Tripod of course, ISO 100, bulb at around 4 to 6 seconds (open shutter when the rocket is launched and close when the light dissipates), f11. Make sure you turn off any stabilization on the lens. Focus to infinity and then back off slightly or focus on something under where the rockets will explode. This was shot at Monday's fireworks using this formula.
