I found this website on the cicada killer wasp which i think this is. The paper wasp looks very similar but this wasp is at least 1 1/2-to 2 inches long and near the size of a hummingbird moth. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Solitary+Wasp+Identification&view=detail&id=739E65FF234E9AE1A1581106D9014BBF78467524&first=71

You definitely found it! We have no cicada in California, so no cicada killer wasps.

I have bookmarked this Wasp ID site. Well done!

In our area we have a truly all orange wasp that digs in the yard and makes a small hole. Our state extension office identified them as the cicada wasp, non aggressive. This resembles the paper wasp. I looked at the site you noted. Now I'm wondering which is correct.

I really dont know but i do know these wasps are aggressive. I captured one today with a butterfly net and put it in the freezer. Took it out and posed it for photos. I posted some pictures on the photo gallery today under the heading--Cicada Killer Wasp
