Getting Prepared.

Union of South Africa is coming through this Sunday and I've been out scouting locations. I think I've done the hillside looking down to death with my recent Flying Scotsman entries.
If the weather stays as it is I should be able to go down a few more stops, and maybe let the train a little further into the picture before releasing the remote. Possibly move over to the left as well and make the up line my leading line into the picture. Any other suggestions?

This a little two car commuter train that'll probably terminate at Princes Risborough or possibly go on to Banbury.

**UPDATE** Any U.K. hoggers planning to snap this will, like me, be disappointed. I've just looked at the website and the steam has been replaced by a 'vintage' diesel, probably a BR class 37. Last time I saw one of these it was putting out enough exhaust that one might almost think it was a steam engine!

Hi John, I look on google maps at railway crossings, the little man can have a look round for you, saves a lot of wasted journeys, but bear in mind small shrubs hedges etc may have grown a lot since they did the survey. I caught the scotsman last week at a new venue but it would have been better if I could have got away from the track more, ah well always next time

I did all that, Bigal. I started out on the road bridge just in the distance, but its got a high parapet that no good for a shortarse like me. So then I moved to this footbridge (the little man does not do footbridges yet) and settled for this with a few minor positional changes. Also went around Downley Common to see if I could get a view from the other side to my Scotsman shots - but if you didn't hear the trains you wouldn't know there was a railway there!
Anyway I shan't be going now that The Union is not pulling.

Nice one, John. I like the angle you used.
Question: what’s the “string” trailing the train? I don’t see it in front. Perhaps I’m showing my ignorance here, but I’m curious.

Great photograph of 60103, it makes a change from those ugly US locomotives which are usually in this section.

60103 photo is Bigals. Jaymat; that the downline to Birmingham and points North so the 2 car unit is coming toward the camera. The white line is probably an interruption cable for a faulty signalling or comma cable.

I know a girl who works on the PW so I'll ask her if she can be more informative.

O.K., Jaymatt - I've got it sorted. The white cabling is ATP cabling (automatic train protection) system. See Wikipedia for full explanation, but basically it monitors the speed of the train and compares to the prevailing signalling, applying an auto brake if the train is deemed to be getting ahead of itself.
