I think this is a pretty good shot. It is a little soft... and you should step a little back so that you can capture the entire butterfly. Important if you wish to enter competitions. The colors are bright and well saturated and the background is well muted. Just get the "whole" subject... unless, of course, you are just interested in..say, the head. But if you try to get the whole body, you should bet the whole body.

I really like the photo of the monarch butterfly but I do agree with stubbles about getting the whole subject in frame, it would have been a great photo.
The hairstreak butterfly photo is very good, nice color and great depth of field.
I don't usually comment on photos with writing on them but that being said, the photo of the monarch butterfly is really good and without the writing it would be great.

I think they are great. My experiences with butterflies is you usually take the shots you can.....they are constantly moving and that is magnified with the telephoto lens (pardon the pun!!!)

In all but the caterpillar pic, the background is a little overpowering - soft yes, but not quite enough contrast. You take very excellent pictures - they will pop with a little more attention to your background. I, too like some "head shots" of "The Butterfly That Ate New York City" - can you get one facing you ? It's tough, as they get skittish.
