Take Route 17 south toward Savannah. You will enter the ACE Basin. Follow signs to Bear Island Wildlife Management Area and Donnelly Wildlife Management Area. Both are excellent for bird photography, and you may also encounter deer. The water is all in impoundments that used to be rice fields in colonial days. Water levels are still controlled by a system called rice trunks, a technology that was brought over by the slaves who converted the cypress swamps that used to dominate the landscape into the vast rice fields that made a handful of white men very wealthy. You will almost certainly see lots of alligators in the impoundments, and you might see water snakes and, if you're lucky, a water moccasin or two. Bring bug spray and enjoy.

There's an active Facebook page "Coastal South Carolina Nature Photographers" that should whet your appetite.
