Just read recently that golden retrievers have become important for cancer research, because they have an unusually high incidence of cancer. They are hoping that treatments and cures for the dogs will lead to the same for humans. Looked to be very humane and caring study too. So not only are they one of the most friendly breeds, they may save many lives through this research too.
The connection between a person and "their" dog is so strong that when either one passes, the other takes a loooong time to recover. Very sorry to hear!
Sorry for your families' loss.
Sorry for your loss.
Dogs are better than people.......
To all of my UHH friends that expressed sympathy and condolences in this thread I sincerely appreciate all of them!
One February weekend in 2005 we were pulling into the Pet Smart's parking lot. The Pearl River SPCA was having an adoption event. My wife saw this puppy from the parking lot and said "I want that puppy". The rest is history.
I may have read this somewhere on UHH and it has stuck with me since, "I'm still trying to be the person my dog thinks I am".
Thanks to all of you again.

Our breeder sent this to us after our first dog died.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Thanks Joe, really appreciate your post!
Need some help with this, was it Mark Twain that said something like "When I die I want to go where dogs go". If some one knows exactly what the quote was and who said it please post.

If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went. - Will Rogers
Someone sent us this poem when we lost our beloved golden:
A rose once grew where all could see,
sheltered beside a garden wall,
And as the days passed swiftly by,
it spread its branches, straight and tall...
One day, a beam of light shone through
a crevice that had opened wide
The rose bent gently toward its warmth
then passed beyond to the other side
Now, you who deeply feel its loss,
be comforted - the rose blooms there
its beauty even greater now, nurtured by
God's own loving care.
I’m very sorry my deepest condolences
There’s nothing I know of to say that will ease the pain of this loss except time

It's amazing the effect animals have on us. I had a dog growing up. Then went into the Marines came home, worked, school, marriage, and family. Living in NYC did not at least for us to have a dog. Now retired and in NH my wife decided we should have a dog. Not me. We(she) about three months ago she found a rescue through this agency. Great little dog. She was right.
So sorry for your loss, Beautiful dog...
