I was still using the 80-200 2.8 until this past January. Thought about buying a used Vr II, but rented the FL first. I bought the FL. It's wonderful on my D810. I could have waited two years for the price to drop but very happy to have it now. The focus speed and sharpness are amazing.

Thanks to all who replied to my question. As usual the club members has great comments and suggestions. As always it is very much appreciated.

My copy of this lens was a dud which I had to send to Nikon a few times for focusing issues, but the lens was high quality. When the VR II came out I quickly upgraded, but was very unhappy that Nikon removed the focus stops from the lens barrel. The latest version, the 70-200/2.8E FL is outstanding in all areas/functions including price, but I wouldn't trade it for anything and it is a workhorse for a sports guy. Worth every penny IMHO! Best of luck.

I suggest one should consider the new Tamron version that is $1700 less money! I personally cannot justify the additional expense. I am shooting a wedding this weekend with my new Tamron lens. In any case, a 70-200 is a must have for any kind of serious photographer!

Glad you are happy with your purchase, but I did see one review where the 2 lenses were compared and at the long end, at 200mm the Nikon had a longer reach. Meaning the Tamron isn’t 200mm. Something to consider. Either the actual copy wasn’t good, or simply that is the reason for the price difference.

It's expensive, but it is the best by far. IMHO!
