Have appreciated your advice on the many topics in this forum. Suggestions and opinions led to the purchase of a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L ii usm a few weeks back. Love the lens and a special thanks to all who made the recommendation. I now am interested in an extender. Originally planned to get the Canon 1.4 ii, but now see there is a 1.4 iii available. I shoot a Canon 80D with mostly wild life and landscape for my own personal enjoyment. Is the 1.4 iii that much better to justify the price differential for a general hobbyist. Thank you all in advance for your suggestions and opinions.

Yes - the electronics for v III are improved and this helps in the autofocus performance.

The 1.4x III was designed to work with the II series lenses. I use one with my 100-400 II (and with a mark I before) on an 80D and 5DIV.
Works great as long as you have good light due to becoming an f/8 lens with the extender.

As already said, the mkiii extender was designed to use with the II series lens. I would say that my 1.4 mkiii resides on my 100-400 mkII 95% of the time. I don’t notice any real difference in picture quality. The only downside is possibly the f/8 max aperture setting at 400mm.

For me, money matters. IMO, you could/would be very happy with the II extender.

On the the other hand, most people who can afford the II lens can afford the III extender. The II lens has been optimized both optically and electronically (AF) for use with the III extender. As a practical matter, I am not so sure you could ever SEE or realize any advantage of the III extender over the II - but I am sure you will sleep better at night

In the next week I will publishing a real world optical test of the II vs the III extender on the 100-400 II and the 400 prime on an 80D.

I have the 1.4x III and the 2x III for many years and have to confirm that both third versions are much better in regard to af and optically as well!

Don't know anything about Canon - thought they made printers & copiers <it's a joke> - but did want to say "thanks" for your user name. BadApple was my CB handle back in the mid 70's and you just triggered the memory. Good shooting with your new lens and upcoming extender.

The III version is matched to your lens. The II is not.
Far superior results with virtually no loss of quality if any using the III version with that specific lens.

From my testing - this does NOT address AF, but it does address optical IQ.

Canon 80D, 100-400 II, distance 40+ feet, LCD focus, from tripod with wired remote, open shade lighting, shot as JPEG and tweaked (identically) in Elements 9 and reduced to 2000 pixels on the long side for viewing here on the Hog.

Optically, I do not see a difference here ( at least on my old school monitor) - it may take laboratory conditions to see a difference - if indeed there is one - but under normal real world conditions IMO, no difference.

There is more to this testing that I will be posting later as a separate post.

I've got a friend that uses her 100-400 II with the 1.4 III and swears it is the only way to go with that lens. Her AF performance with the II was not nearly as good. I have no first-hand experience, and I am only going on hers. She is an accomplished bird photographer, so I take what she says as accurate and informed.

My Canon 100-400 II does not work with a Canon III (2x) extender. Only the Canon extender II (1.4x) works.
