1.) I'm thinking about getting a Nikon SB-600 Speedlight to use with my Nikon D3s.
What is your opinion of this flash?
2.) Most of the ones I have found (all used) do not come with the color filter set (Nikon SJ-1) which was included originally. To those of you who have the SB-600, do you use the (SJ-1) color filter set which came with it?
Thanks

What is your intended purpose for this Speedlight?
I have had the SB600 for a long time. I did get it new but I don’t recall any colored filters coming with it. I just looked at the manual and it only lists the stand and soft case as supplied accessories. A set of colored soft gels is listed as an available option for purchase separately.
I've had the SB 600 for a few years. Cannot recall the {supplied} gell filters, although have used gells from another source, mainly to balance with tungsten / fluorescent /ambient lighting.
I have an SB600. It did not come with a color filter set. I have had the flash for 10 years.
I have an SB-700 and it came with the color correction filters for tungsten and fluorescent light. I experimented with the tungsten (amber color) filter to see if it would work. The filters have tangs on them that depress switches on the flash. The flash reads the positions of the switches to determine which filter is mounted. If the camera is set to auto white balance it will automatically apply the correct white balance. You can also enter the filter color in the flash menu.

I have just looked at my SB600. There is absolutely nowhere where tangs can hit switches. You might be able to remove the diffuser and retro fit filters (or tape them overtop) but the diffuser can only be pulled out and used if the flash-head is swivelled and pointing straight up. So there must be some attachment to hold filters (either OEM or 3rd party) but it is not automatic and has no separate control over the light balance.
I mostly use a Sto Fen diffuser. Love the flash.

I've had my SB-600 since 2008 and love it.
So much so, I bought a SB-700 (to keep it company).
I did not get any colored filters with the SB-600 either, but I did get two filters, Green and Amber snap-on's with the SB-700
Love both Speed Lights!

I have one and use it to compliment the two SB-800 strobes I have. It's a pretty good unit. Depending on use, as it does have its limits, it's quite good. I believe it's one of the first strobes to have TTL. If you are getting a really good price on this, it'd be a good buy.

Hi Naldo,
I have the SB700, not sure of the differences. While I don't use the colored panels, I keep the included plastic diffuser dome on at all times and no longer use my larger diffuser as it causes flash to flop down when walking. The TTL setting works well and It is easy to adjust flash power as needed. I only do real estate photography so this answer may not be helpful to you. I have been very happy with the flash. The rechargeable batteries last for hundreds of flashes.

I have owned the SB-600 for many years. It did not come with a set of filters.
If you ask me about the quality of the SB-600 I can say that it is a very good flash...assuming the operator knows flash photography.
I've got 4 SB600 flashes and none of them came with filters, just a case and stand. Take care & ...

Huh?
To add light as needed, to balance the quality of existing light, and to occasionally help capture motion
I was mistaken! Upon more careful research, I realize that the SB-600 did not originally ship with the colored filters set (SJ-1). As others here have pointed out, it was an optional accessory.
