Irwin,

I don't think I've seen anything with the 5400 around 1X, I would think the image circle would be small though and vignette on full frame sensors. But without good test this is just my guess, which isn't worth much!!

Your images are exceptional, certainly showing off the 5400 in your very capable hands I might add!!

Peter's clamps are really a help with mounting various lens setups, I've used the Hejnar "Y" telephoto lens support but these clamps are much better for our macro use IMO.

Looking forward to seeing more superb images from your new 5400.

Mike,

If I have time today, I will check on vignetting by shooting an old light table at 1x. Checking the resolution at the corners may take some time, though. For what it's worth, I did not see much vignetting on the full frame in the image above (slightly less than 1x), but it just may not have been noticeable with that image. I'm excited just to shoot with the darn thing to see what I find.

With Peter's clamps is it easy to switch the camera orientation from horizontal to vertical?

Take care and be well.

Irwin

Irwin,

That would be amazing if the 5400 doesn't vignette at 1X!!! Also, would be interesting if the sharpness remains intact at the edges at 1X!!

Should be easy to rotate with the clamps as I have them setup, just loosen the Allen head tightening bolt on the clamp tops and rotate the lens assembly, then retighten the clamps. My PN105 might be a little more difficult as I have a snug fit with the clamps open, this allows more compression than required on a 58mm tube, squeezing the tape some.

Best,

Thanks Jerry for spending the time to look and comment.

I have read a bunch of the posts so far.
One of the guys who teaches classes in this area of So Calif (all the instructors for this series are members of Inland Empire Professional Photographers and Videographers) makes macro rigs from old projector lenses, scanner lenses and enlarger lense(he uses the enlarger stands also) among others. I think he mentioned microscope adapters also - he apparently has a shop/machinist who make custom parts for him. My local camera store has a classroom upstairs over the shop and has classes regularly - often free for customers who follow them on Facebook.

Jerry,

Well that's convenient to have in your backyard!!

The Photomacrography site (http://www.photomacrography.net) is a great reference & resource with a host of world class folks involved in this subject that can help too. Many have created their own high performance systems from surplus and non-standard equipments, Robert (Close-Up Photography), Peter (MJKZZ), Rik (Zerene), Lou (Ecomingafoundation.worldpress), Beatsy, ChrisR, Pau, ChrisS, Johan ( Extreme Macro), Saul to name just a few. I know I have benefited immensely from the collective wisdom of this group, probably unequalled anywhere on this subject.

Certainly worth spending a few hours roaming around there in the Equipment Discussions, caution it can become highly addictive

Mike,

I checked and the is some vignetting at at a tad under 1x. The two attached shots were hand held using the light table. The fist had a piece of paper on it to get approximate focus, and the second on is the glass of the light box. Both show vignetting. I will do more controlled tests after I finish my pending project. I will have to systematically compare it at 1x to my various macro lenses including the 35mm Tominon.

Best

Irwin

Irwin,

That's not as bad vignetting as I thought!! Corner sharpness/CA will be interesting though.

Best,
