Interesting photo. It looks like one of those mirrors you would find at a caravel fun house that distorts the person making them look short and fat.

They did, so did lots of other early '50s cars. There is probably more steel and chrome on these bumpers than there is on most entire cars today. That is not necessarily a bad thing.

I don't know those cars were built like TANKS. Just the other day my 2013 van got hit with a bicycle (van was standing still), Ripped off the front license plate, stripped the threads, and dislocated the inner fuchsia to the front it took me and another person to get that back in Place because the inner locking tabs were out of whack.

Modern vehicles are designed to "fall apart" for good reasons. These old cars from the '50s and '60s had lots of style and were "built like tanks" they were lethal in an accident, even at speeds around 30 or 40mph. Modern vehicles fall apart in an accident to carry away momentum thereby protecting the occupants. Air back, seat belts, etc. have hugely improved survivability in a crash. Sadly, even a low speed crash will cause lots of damage, but you will walk away.
