A little border insanity ... on the US - Canadian Border!

Used to be that crossing into Canada and returning to the US was a pleasant experience. No passports required, just some identification and answer a few friendly questions. NO MORE, it seems. ICE is on the rampage. See this:

Since the vast majority of the border is not marked, it would seem that carrying a GPS might be a necessity. What has happened? I wonder how those folks who live in Detroit and work in Windsor, or vice-versa, manage the daily commute? Of course that was then. Maybe those folks have had to find other employment. My country has gone off the rails.

I guess the young lady was lucky she was allowed to call for help! This is the way we treat people from one of our strongest allies? Shameful! I certainly hope that the Canadian government lodges a strong protest.

Please ask Justin Trudeau to call out Mr Trump. Perhaps "go out back" and settle this c**p "mano a mano"? I'd put my money on Justin.

It will probably be a slap fest but I will still put my money on Trudeau.

We used to cross over at the Pigeon River entry to take pictures of the High Falls and hike back beyond the falls on the Canadian side and even dine in the surrounding area. But no more quite a few years ago. Need a passport or some such document to get back in. The exit/entry rules on pets changed too. We never go anywhere without at least one of our dogs. Sigh.

Couple of facts to keep in mind here;

1) Passports have been required to cross the US/Canadian border since 2009.

2) I has always been illegal to enter either country for any reason, and no matter how brief, without immediately contacting the nearest respective Immigration/customs office.

3) Foreigners found inside the border of either country have always been subject to arrest and detention if they crossed without interview and consent of both country's Immigration/customs system.

4) The girl in this story is a 19 YO girl, thus considered an adult in both countries. She also had no ID with her.

5) The girl in this story is a French Citizen, thus could not be just sent back to Canada without proper ID and the consent of the Canadian Government.

6) Ignorance of well established i*********n l*ws and international border location are not considered a valid defense or justification for violating them.

I think that Brother Soba may have noted a possible contributing factor, sad to say.

As I noted in my initial post, when I was last in Canada - admittedly many years ago - entry was very easy, and re-entry to the US was also very easy. I suspect that before 911 and the "War on Terror" and Mr Trump's stirring up xenophobia in this country such an immigration "crime" would have been handled far differently. The situation described in the Huff Post seems to have been blown far out of proportion. I suspect that most of us have been stopped by the police for a traffic violation and been let off with a warning. This situation could have and should have been handled similarly. Surely some telephone calls could have resolved the problem without imprisoning the young woman. Wasn't the offense a misdemeanor, akin to jaywalking? How may people are taken to court and imprisoned, however briefly, for the misdemeanor of jaywalking? Seems pretty shabby treatment of the guest of one of our oldest and closest allies.... Or is this another example of "zero tolerance" in action? Laws untempered by common sense....

Canada would handle the situation exactly the same, and both of our countries always have going back decades. This isn't something new.

So...Both Canada and the US routinely arrest and detain people who unknowingly cross a poorly marked international border? And this sort of nonsense has been going on for.....decades? Can you furnish any examples of such idiocy in the recent past?
