The Return of the Big Boy

I saw this in my model railroad forum and thought this would be a wonderful once in a lifetime photography opportunity. I know I would dearly love to be there. I would just hope I wasn't so awe struck that I forget to push the shutter button. With being a part time hobbyist I'd just take all my stuff and see what I can do once I found a spot, if I could find a spot.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. It kind of fits in several places but not fully in any.

I saw this in my model railroad forum and thought ... (show quote)

You might want to post it in the Trains section (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-131-1.html), though Admin may move it to Links.

Oh yeah, there is a train section. I didn't see it my first time looking. Plus somebody already beat me to it. I guess admin can just delete if they so desire as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting RR history, the RR were responsible for the early west progress.

I had the pleasure of getting up close and in the cab of the newly-restored Bicentennial Freedom Train locomotive, the old Southern Pacific Daylight #4449 (which I believe is still operating in excursion service today), when it passed through the Chicago & Northwestern's Proviso yards in early 1975; I was a road brakeman operating between there and Clinton, Iowa at the time. I took a few snapshots but they're long lost...

Yep, the #4449 is still in service. It's owned by the city of Portland, Oregon, or at least it was the last I heard. It's kept at the Brooklyn roundhouse along with another steamer, the #700, and a few diesel electric classics.

Chaostain, this is a wonderful article. Thank you for sharing it. I love trains and might plan to go see this behemoth on the rails. When I first saw your title, I was thinking of the restaurant chain.

You're welcome. I too love trains, both real and model. That's my other main hobby. We're in the very first stages of building a model railroad. I spotted this on the model railroad forum and thought it would be a wonderful photo opportunity.
