For years, I have been downloading my photos to my desktop Mac computer where I used Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Lightroom to work on the pictures. I now bought a new Mac Book Pro laptop that I want to use for the same purpose. My problem (due to brain fart, probably) is that I can't recall what app/software I need to install in order to be able to download the photographs. I recall that when I bought my Nikon D 7100, it came with a cd that was used to install the program onto my old computer, but I can't find that cd. I think it was a Nikon ViewNX2. I went on the Nikonusa.com web site, found what I thought I needed, but it seems to be non compatible with the D 7100 camera.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what exactly it is that I need, where to find it, and anything else I might be overlooking. I feel stupid asking this, but......... thanks.

You can use Nikon NX-i and do the same way you did before. Or you can get a card reader and transfer the files from the memory card without any software needed.

The program is Nikon Transfer, but that is not the best way to download. For a simple download on your Mac Book Pro, just create a folder on your desktop. Take the SD flash memory from your camera and stick it in the SD slot on your computer or into an external USB flash memory reader (they sell for under $20). An icon will appear on your desktop when the computer sees the card. Open the SD card and then the file called DCIM. You will find all of your photos inside the DCIM folder. Copy and paste the files from that folder to the file you made on your desktop and you're in business. If you want the folder in a different location, either create that file in the location you want or move the filled folder from the desktop to your preferred location.

Make sure you make a backup. If you want to format the SD card, do that in your camera and not in your computer so special hidden files that the camera may need are written to the SD card.

I just stick the card in appropriate card reader so that a new device opens on my desktop labeled for the particular camera (e.g. D7100) and then I open Lightroom and 'Import' from the selected device. My Lightroom setup automatically transfers all images from the selected device to a directory which I originally set up only to be used for post processing. When I'm done with PP I move (via Lightroom) photo files to their subject directory homes. (e.g. birds to the appropriate directory for birds, etc.) Lightroom will move sidecar files containing PP instructions along with associated image file to where I specify so this keeps my catalogue and disk directory structure in synch.

If you do not have a card reader, just download from your camera. Connect the cable to the camera and MacBookPro. Open "Photos" and then turn on the camera. If you do not want to use "Photos", just create a folder and then use Finder to locate "Applications." In "Applications", go to "Capture Image". When you turn on the camera, you can then direct the download to your folder.

I use the USB cable that came with both my D7200 and D500 to plug directly into my Macbook Pro (Need a USB to USBC cable adapter). Open Lightroom then turn on the camera and go to File -> Import photos and videos and you will see your camera at the upper left of the screen. To transfer using wifi, I just turn on wifi in my camera's menu, go to settings on my Macbook Pro and into wifi to look for the Camera. Can use Bluetooth as well, but wifi works fine, so I haven't tried it. You can also buy a USB mem card reader. Plug your camera's mem card into the reader and the reader into a USB to USBC cable adapter then into your Macbook Pro. All methods work very well, but I find plugging the camera directly into the Macbook Pro is easiest for me.

Get yourself a multiport adapter that connects to your Mac Thunderbolt port (or whatever they call it) that has multiple USB3 inputs, then connect a simple SD card reader. Download direct into Lightroom.

The Nikon software is View NX-i. It has a transfer function. It creates a new folder for you when it transfers the files and numbers them sequentially. I just did a screen shot of mine and drew an arrow to the transfer function. I'm sure it supports files from your D7100.

Nikon's current editing program is Capture NX-D. It's a disappointment. The old Capture NX-2 was far better. I think Capture NX-2 is still available. I use it for my D7000 files. I think it supports files from the D7100.

I have an iMac and I just plug the ardor reader into the computer and photo usually opens itself, sometimes I have to manually activate it from launchpad

I use Nikon's View-NX2 for transferring photo files from card to computer.

I had a similar problem with a Nikon D850 and Mac OS "High Sierra". I could import Nikon NEF files from my card via a card reader but not directly from the camera. Neither the Mac nor Lightroom could not "see" the camera. I downloaded and installed some Nikon apps, including "Nikon Tranfer 2" and "View NX 2". Now, when I connect the D850 directly to my MacBook Pro and turn the camera ON, Lightroom immediately sees the camera. (The Mac does not.) I then download directly from the camera into Lightroom. If I launch "Nikon Transfer 2", it also sees both the Nikon D850 with images. However, I do not have to launch Nikon Transfer 2 for Lightroom to see/download images in the camera. Although Lightroom can see/download images directly from the camera, the camera does NOT appear on the Mac's Desktop as an external hard drive. Also, "View NX" does NOT see the camera. (When the card is mounted using a card reader, the card does show on the Desktop.)

I suggest you visit Nikon's software web site. A good place to start is: https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/ni/NI_article?articleNo=000001049&configured=1&lang=en_US

This describes Nikon's current software with download links.

For "Nikon Transfer", the web page says:
"New camera models ship with View NX 2 which includes Nikon Transfer 2. For newer cameras and computers, please use View NX 2.

"Allows for simple transfer of images captured with a Nikon digital camera or images recorded to media such as memory cards to a computer. Designed for easy integration with ViewNX and Capture NX software."

When you bought your MacBook Pro and fired it up it would have asked you if you wanted to migrate files and software from your old Mac and then it would have walked you through the process.

If you can no longer migrate, you can import apps from the archived "Time Machine" files. Apps may have to be re-registered. Re-registering is easy if you've stored serial numbers in an app like "1 Password", "Keychain", etc.
