We had to buy two replacement shrubs this year because our two Crepe Myrtle didn't make it over the winter...
These are supposed to be hardy and native to LI, so we thought we'd give them a try.... never heard of them, but I loved the colors of the leaves, plus these pretty white flowers that change to red when the white petals fall!!

Taken with Canon 70D and Helios 44-2 lens

I miss the crape myrtle we had in Virginia. Way too harsh here.

Nice pic angela. most crepe myrtle will not survive in LI. There are a few that will. you are in zone 6b or 7. we are in zone 5 and have one that has bloomed for about 15 years... some branches must be taken out nearly yearly from dieback. we also fertilize quite liberally and that seems to help. good luck with these gorgeous bushes.

Thanks Tom... I hope so, they'll be planted in large pots as well... but these might be hardier than the myrtles.

Thanks for your visit, BlueMorel... I had my myrtles planted in large pots, I think that was the reason they did't make it.

Thanks so much, alby, for your visit and info... ours lasted two years, but another reason they didn't make it, is that we had them planted in large pots... this winter, being that it got warm in February, things started towake up and then freezing again, did a lot of damage to our perennials. They were beautiful while they lasted and hope these last longer!!
