I am a happy Canon owner. But, 3 years ago I bought a Nikon, sight unseen and unknown model from a new employee to help him get settled in.
What I got is a D70, bag, kit lens, flash, two accessory lens and a 70-200 Tamron lens.
I like the camera for vehicle carry and quick grab the bag and run.
Recently the rubber seal around the mirror has dried up and pieces have gotten on the sensor. There's 2 large smudges in the upper right corner mostly visible on sky shots.
What is your thoughts, repair for likely the value of the body, or junk it and move on?

Clean it! If you damage the sensor while cleaning it then junk it. I bought a D70s a couple of years ago that worked perfectly for $30.

It's a nice candidate for infrared conversion. It might be worth looking into that.
I’d say junk and wash your hand with plenty of holy water and harsh soap before handling your canon it won’t smell Nikon and keep responding to your adjustment
D70 has a 6.1MP sensor, which is less than newer smart phones. Personally, I'd sell the lens and put the body on my antique photo gear shelf.

Even with 6.1MP I would rather use it than a smart phone for my pictures.

I have read all the dire warnings on UHH of what happens to those who try to clean their own sensors, not wanting that fate, I decided to do it anyway. There's still a faint spot but the rest is clean along with the mirror and view finder.
Tomorrow I am going to take it for a morning walk and see if I like the results.
BeBuLamar is correct, it gives better pictures than a cell phone. And I just love the Nikon bag, though I would never think of putting a Canon in it.
I appreciate all the thoughtful replies, they are another reason to love UHH.

Junk it, if you miss having that quick grab bag you can buy a good used camera with more mega pixels and features for less than the repair costs of the D70. I still have the original digital Rebel, 6mp, I use it for two things, shooting with old legacy lenses and for shooting product shots for ebay.

Before junking it, at least make an attempt to fix the rubber seal yourself. You can always junk the camera later if your repair effort isn't a success.
When you convert it to IR they’ll be removing the glass that has the spot on it and they may be able to fix the rubber on the mirror at the same time.

Oh come on, I'm an advocate of smartphone photography, but even I know it would trash a smartphone in most comparisons.
