Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad-Chama Yard-2017

This is the wood structured coal tipple and sand house.
The coal tipple is capable of working. I've heard they have future plans to operate for demonstration only and not actually loading coal.
The only other wood coal tipple I know of is at the Northern Nevada RR in Ely, Nevada. It is in non working condition. It's in bad shape.
There is a "new" one at Greenfield Village (Ford Museum). It works and they use it everyday.
Durango & Silverton RR has a working sand house.
If anyone knows of another standing wood coal tipple, please let me know.
The sand house does store bagged sand. The handling system is capable of working. Although, I've heard there is a minor problem. Hopefully, they will get it to work, soon.

I had a model of that tipple years ago on my model railroad.

I've heard of one other model of this one.
Sounds like this is the only one.
I'm not around the serious railroad modelers.

Plan on being at Chama, July 20th thru Aug 31st.
For anyone visiting during that time, send a private message.
Maybe, we can hookup.
Actually, planning to be in Durango the 6 days before that.
Unless the fire runs me off.....
The fire has been within 3 miles of the rv park.......

Pat, the sand house plan was to put it back in daily operations. Lugging those sacks of sand up to the sand dome on the engines is not only hard work, it can be risky.

A Cumbres & Toltec doubleheader train heading north out of the Chama, NM station (May 2017) just passing the coaling tower. 487 K-36 is in the lead with 489, also a K-36, in trail. I have taken this train with three locomotives leading a 24 car train out of the Chama station.

Nice shot!
Question, when did you catch the triple header?

It's been ten years or more since I saw the triple, but it seems to me that opening day this year had three locomotives leading the train from Chama.

Fred, I checked that and the opening day train was "only" double headed.

Still, even the doubleheader train makes for a great photo op. I'll be going up to Chama to 'chase train' later this month. I once made the mistake of parking my gold colored car in the station parking lot with the wind blowing from the locomotive to the parking lots. I discovered my mistake when I got back to the car after the train had left the station. The car had a nice layer of nice dark/black soot. I had to laugh...I should have known better than to park there. Haven't, since that lesson learned, plus the car is now a dark gray - came from the factory that color...lol.
