That's really pretty interesting even though I no longer use Nikon. I've been say forever that refurbished is at least as good as new, if not better, due to the extra scrutiny/inspections the factory performs. Heads off any potential problems before they even can cause you an issue AND saves bucks!

Good point. Refurbished items are normally cheaper to purchase. I don't want someone selling me something that they claim is a new product, when in fact it isn't so.

I looked at the two refurbished Nikon lenses I have, refurbished by Nikon...one has the marks, the other (more recently purchased) does not.

I purchased the one with the markings in late 2015, the one without the markings a couple of months ago. Both from Nikon.

So this is not a definitive way to tell, or perhaps Nikon no longer uses this system.

I think it's a guide that is still worth knowing. You have a fifty-fifty chance at best! B^)

Agree...
If you see the marks you know.
If you don't see the marks you don't know.

Unless you got it directly from Nikon, maybe somebody else did the refurb.

I bought them both directly from the Nikon-online refurbished store.

I would assume that the serial metal plate is soft and would taking very little to make their marks.
