Omri, my friends Irish Wolfhound. I was dogsitting for my friends at the time—€” I could tell (he was 6 years old) and slowly edging towards the end of his life.

He was a beautiful dog with a gigantic, gentle heart.

This is the last photo ever taken of him.

Olympus OMD-EM5 and (the excellent) Panasonic LUMIX 20mm f1.7

What a sweet looking boy. I've always wanted one but the short life span would break my heart.

A-w-w-w. I didn't realize that breed had such a short lifespan.

Large dogs in general have a shorter lifespan. For instance, the Bernese Mountain dog has an average life of seven years, I lost my male at five years. While the big dogs are not as ferocious as small ones (think Chihuahua) they are usually as loving as they are big.

Yes... I agree— I think you have to go into it knowing that you won’t have them very long... it’s still heartbreaking, though— they are magnificent dogs.

Yes— all “giant” breeds do. And if old age doesn’t get them, bone cancer or bloat will... very prone to both.

I still miss my dog who died in 1972. I have a picture of him on my office wall.

Yep— they sure get inside our hearts, don’t they?

Our golden is going down hill fairly rapidly, she will be 14 come November. It really affects us when we loose a pet. Nice shot Indigo.

Thank you, and my sympathies for your dog. I have four dogs, and three are elderly... I notice the signs: sleeping more, the gray hair around the muzzle, arthritis setting in, etc. It’s always so hard—
