Hi guys. As a science teacher I was always amazed at the myth of the "8 glasses of water a day needed" and the sports drink con. Here is a link to a yahoo article that confirms my suspicions: sports drinks are a great big con.
http://health.yahoo.net/experts/dayinhealth/are-sports-drinks-harmful-or-healthyI also have to laugh at the folks that think they need to "detox" their livers etc. A good dose of salts is far cheaper than the crap on sale in chemists (drug stores) and is basically the same thing.
Interesting article. Can you provide a link or more info on what you mean about a good dose of salts for the liver please? Thank you.
This article is probebly very true but in like most cases there are exceptions - first off I feel the first one out there- "Gatoraid" is a legitimate rehydtor and healthy drink.
The rest are just riding it's rep and flooding the market wih sugar wate.
Like all it should not be over indulged.
I have ALWAYS thought that 8perday was nothing more than a made up pisser... I cannot believe how many people load up their shopping carts with case after case of those $1 bottles of "spring" water..
Me ? I drink water when I'm thirsty...
When we had finished up with a nasty fire, Gatoraid was available. I preferred a glass of good ol' water.
Two points ... firstly in the UK bottled water is more expensive than petrol... secondly the calories consumed in most sports drinks far outweigh the benefits of those lost during exercise...

20 years ago did you ever think we would be PAYING for water?

Just goes to show instead of growing smarter with age, most people today and getting dumber and dumb... Like a bunch of freegin Lemmings....
I get so $#%@*& mad at the gov. about thier clean water act. I live in the Sierra Mountains - we have wonerful clear, fresh, CLEAN water from our mountain streams in our resivour and they make us polute it with all kinds of chemicals - DAHHHHHHHHH. I am not kidding - out of the tap - cold you can drink it - but let it set a few minutes and it stinks and tasts like H--l.
This may be needed in some places but not here in our area.
As for selling water - I was in the grocery bussines all my working days and if anyone ever told me the water isle would be a big as it is today I would tel them they were nuts - the same for disposible diapers which should be banned.
The problem is, there is good and bad science. For example, Mythbusters is extremely poor science. Unfortunately the lay person in most cases does not understand the difference, which is why, when you see an advertisement for medicines, toothbrushes, and the like, the people in the ad wear white coats as if they are scientists in the apparent bid to make us think highly of these products.
8 glasses a day? Yes I'll let you Google this. The scientist that announced the need for 8 glasses a day so long ago made a retraction. He had forgotten to include the water produced by the metabolism of our food which actually equals this. But you still need to drink and any water based drink will do such as tea, coffee.
So do we need sports drinks? Luckily the body excretes (usually by urination) all of the excess salts we take in. Sugar? Have an apple. We all need more fibre too!!!
Lachmap: Well I like the wisdom but not the science behind it.
