I totally agree! We once found a baby raccoon that had been abandoned by its mother and was near death and raised it until it was old enough to release back into the wild (we didn't make a pet of it). Before doing that I called around to see if I could get it vaccinated against rabies and was told that I could be arrested for harboring a wild animal! Guess it's true that no good deed goes unpunished!
