Just got my first DSLR this last Christmas, can anyone tell me when is the best time to have them serviced and checked for calibrations. Hope I am stating this right but beings they are electronic I think there is a probable time frame to have them checked out.
Thank You
Bob

I've had SLRs since the 1970s, and I've never had them serviced. "If it ain't broke..."

I have customers bring or send in there cameras for a general service / clean and check all the time. Those who use there cameras professionally bring them in more often but as a general rule, every 6 months is good. Get the firmware updated, the shutter count checked, the sensor cleaned(maybe more often) and get it checked out by a technician.

A rule of thumb is to service the camera after a few years of use. The more it is used the more frequent the service.
Calibration of camera and lenses in my book is left to a technician.

Here's what I learned when I purchased a brand new Nikon back in 2010. There is a one year warranty. However, if one sends the camera in for a CLR prior to the one year expiration, the camera is returned with a 6 month warranty because of the service.

You didn't mention what brand of camera you received, but check with the manufacturer and get details on the warranty situation.

never have taken a camera in for a "service tune up". They seem to last far past their expected life. GAS takes over before one dies. I do drive Olympus and the gas mileage is pretty good.
