Thanks Tom. Good luck with the feeder. I have a Nikon D5200 I used a 55-300 mm Nikon lens @ 135 mm, shutter speed was 1/1600 sec with an 5.6 F stop and 1000 ISO. Glad you liked the pics.

Doug, the bird's wings are beating about 60-75 times per second. By speeding up your shutter speed you might get more crisp, sharper images. I'm shooting in the woods and if I do not have enough light to get at least 1/2500 sec I don't shoot. Personnel preference but with birds I want clear, sharp images. FYI the red in the bird's head and neck will change as sunlight changes, and the bird wants to impress you. They control the coloration.

I'm not sure this is totally a focus issue.... I think it might be a softness in the lens/aperture setting.
Here is a humble suggestion:
Try upping your aperture setting to a "sweeter spot" for that lens. I think you will get a "crisper" image at 7.1 or 8. Every lens has that one or two stops that produce the "most crisp" results. Looks like your friends will be returning on an ongoing basis, so you will have a chance to play with the camera/lens settings.
FYI, I have had super success with my d3400 with ISO as high as 3200 with rather extreme cropping. If you don't have to crop much, the newer sensors can produce good sharp images up to ISO 6400. (see examples below) Lens is a AF-S 70-300 VR ED
Your subjects are so amazing and they are fun to shoot. Don't be afraid to push your camera/lens settings and have fun doing so!!!!
