Which one will work best

Looking to purchase a new camera and lens. 5dmkiv and either Canon 100-400 is ii or Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 sport. I shoot Baseball in the summer and the Canon should be ok for outside. But inside shooting hockey is my main concern. Don't want to purchase the canon if it wont be fast enough for shooting indoors.

I have some experience shooting hockey years ago when my son played and IMHO 100 or 120 mm is too long and you would be better served by a wider angle zoom

Look into Canon 70 - 200 mm f/2.8 III and Teleconverter 1.4x III. Great combo and fast. One of Canon's best lenses for sports. I use it with Canon 7D MII (10 fps).
With the crop sensor of the 7D MII and the tele 1.4x you'll be at approximately 450mm.

The full frame sensor and high ISO's should let you gobble up lots of light at hockey games, with a strong nod towards higher shutter speeds for action. Not sure how fast those lenses can respond to focus on skaters zipping around on the ice or how well the focusing array in the camera can track your preferred target. That would be something to look into.

The 100-400 Mark II isn't fast but your can make up for it by raising your ISO especially using a 5D Mark IV body. It should still be fine for hockey and it will definately be fine for baseball.

Even a /f2.8 is pretty slow for shooting indoor games!

My setup is one step behind this. A 70-200 2.8 L USM with a 1.4x II on an 80D. I have been very happy with it but am looking at the 70-200 2.8 II (the Canon 70 - 200 mm f/2.8 III has not been released yet) with the 1.4xIII. I am giving up my Sigma 150-600 C since I seldom go over 400mm anyway.

Have you shot indoor sports? My experience with 2.8 is that is plenty fast enough.

Yeah. Faster than that and the DOF is too shallow. If I want an athlete's eye to be the only thing in focus, I can do that more effectively in post. If 2.8 is too slow, then bump the ISO.

I second this seeing as you will be doing indoors sports and relatively low light action shots.

LOVE that first image. You did good in such low light conditions. The black background really "pops" the subject.

The F2.8 lens will be fast enough, but at that aperture your depth of field is pretty shallow, so you will likely end up stopping down slightly to increase DoF. Besides you can use some pretty high ISO with that camera, so the 100-400 II shouldn't be a problem. Also, the Sigma is a huge and heavy lens, and the Canon is less so, if that is a consideration.

No, the Canon will NOT be fast enough. I started doing indoor sports with an f4 and I couldn’t get any real fast action unless my ISO was pretty high.
Or, like I used to do, wait till the action stops or changes direction so there’s a momentary pause etc.
