I live in a very rural area of California. The gold miners came here in droves during the 1800’s... so there is a lot of history here... and a lot of abandoned old buildings, which often prove fantastic for photography subjects.

I normally carry at least one of my cameras with me at all times. In the rare case that I don’t, I rely on my iPhone 6s Plus, which has a rear camera at 12 MP.

The shot below was taken with my iPhone. This old building sits on the edge of the Mokelumne River near Electra Road in Jackson, CA. It was misty out, and this abandoned building looked so beautiful nestled in the hillside.

Had me mesmerized. The photo drew me right inside the building itself At least what I imagined the inside to be like.

Great places to photograph people, if it can be done safely. Waking away, faces turned away, etc to add the air of mystery and separation.

Very nice. Did you consider cloning out the trees in front of the cabin? We just drove through Jackson on our way to Nevada. Are there many sites like this in the area. I have not explored the foothills photograghically.

Cameras are just tools. Same as palett and brush. Artistic ablity is inherent i think to feel see and capture a subject. Some have it some dont. you have it. love your presentation. rob

Nothing wrong with using your phone. In fact, many colleges are teaching their photojournalism students how to get the most out of a phone camera. I have an iPhone X and the quality of the images is pretty nice, and if you understand the limitations of the medium, you can capture great images. And the old adage is "The best camera to have is the one you have with you..."

I used to work in Jackson California at Prospect Motors. Then I used to work for the Ledger dispatch in Angels Camp and had to go pass Mokelumne Hill everyday. You got some good shot there and I can't believe that came from a cell phone

We have retired and moved to Bluffton South Carolina but our son still lives in Roseville and we still have friends up in Pioneer. Great job on the photography keep it up

I remember Prospect Motors well— and of course the Ledger dispatch is still going strong. Lots more people here now, though, than when I moved up here in 1989! There is rush hour traffic in Jackson nowadays. Hard to believe, but true!
