I am fortunate to have a D500 for my prime camera. As a backup I kept the D7200. When the D7200 is on the shelf, should I remove the battery or does it matter.

If you're not going to be using it fo months at a time then do take it out.

back to the ops question... I take the batteries out of both 5D3s, but keep the batteries in the same bag as the body. I'm sure at one point we've all picked up the camera and tried to use it, but quickly found out that the battery wasn't there (same with the missing memory card). To help prevent this, I cut up a piece of thin red cloth and stick part of it in the battery compartment then close the door... "remove before flight" kind of thing. I don't want to risk a leaking battery in either camera body... much simpler and safer to remove the battery. BTW, some cameras that have GPS in them will continue to "hunt" and will drain the battery in short order... don't remember which body that was.

What an unnecessary and snarky comment. Perhaps the OP wanted to hear users actual experiences instead of just the recommendation in the user manual.

What a churlish reply! If you can't find a polite way to say it, then please don't contaminate UHH with your spleen.

Usually there is one in every crowd, but thankfully, again usually, only one.

Initially, no - but the OP's reply cleared up that point.

I, for one, didn't find his snarky comment funny: and I am not alone.

First I want to say that the mean comments about a good question are totally mean and rude.
Second this is a very good question. I have my own routine. A couple of my cameras are on call for soccer games.
So I leave a battery in them for grab and go. Anything more then a month and I take batteries out.

This brought up a habit and routine I have. I shut off my camera when removing and inserting batteries.
When changing or removing cards shut off the camera. Do not mix very different settings on one card.
I carry xtra batteries at all times. The Sony's I have grew in technology while the batteries in these
cameras could not be upgraded. So I have many batteries of the a7 series and a6300 etc.

The Nikon batteries are amazing. I have them from years ago and use them now on my LED monitor etc.

Luckily, battery leakage during storage has become more rare. However, it is an ugly thing when it happens. Better to be safe than sorry. We should all remove them more often than we do.

I keep mine in and check them if not in use for a few weeks. Keep in mind that if you take the battery out for a long time I think the internal battery that keeps the time will run down
