Background: I am embarking on low-light, nighttime photography and use an LX5 at f/2.0 Leica glass at ISO 100. I also have an A6500 and often use the Sony kit lens 16-50 and the 18-200 - widest f/stop is f/3.5 for both lenses.
Questions:
1. If I wanted to match the LX5 at f/2.0 could members confirm - if I increase A6500 ISO 1.5 to 2 stops to ISO 400, I am essentially equivalent to LX5 settings
2. A6xxx users - what ISO value have you observed unacceptable noise (yes it is subjective) in general and in low-light captures (with or without 3 exposure bracketing +/- 2EV)
Thank you, Bob
Being a film shooter, as well as digital, noise is the equivalent of grain. I find it difficult to shoot using ISO3200 film without seeing grain. It's just part of the process. Don't fret about it.
As with film, some digitals have better characteristics with high ISO, some don't. Unfortunately, if I find a particular film objectionable because of noise, I didn't just throw a few thousand dollars away. A few dollars will purchase a different roll of film.

I regularly shoot at ISO 1600 with my A6500 and after applying a little noise reduction I find it quite acceptable.

I've found the same to be true. Acceptability (subjective as mentioned) decreases with ISO beyond 1600 but I would not hesitate to go up as high as 6400 to get the shot if necessary. That's where I've set my auto-ISO limit.

Instead of relying on what others think is acceptable noise, you could do your own ISO tests with your camera and find out what ISO gives you noise you find acceptable.
You need to do some experiementing, ISO at 3200 or less should be good. I often go ISO 6400, but my sensor is bigger and designed differntly.

Yes, but the exact number of stops is 1 2/3rd stops. So if your camera is set for 1/3rd stop increments, going from ISO100 to 200 is one stop . . and from 200 to ISO320 would give you 1 2/3rd stops to be the same as the LX5 at f/2.02. I'm not a Sony user so I'll let others have a crack at this. But I've heard that Sony sensors are pretty good and I don't think ISO320 is going to be noisy for you.
Thank you all. Appreciate the replies and advice. I will do a series of fixed setting shots and only changing ISO.
Bob
f/3.5 and ISO 320 is the same as f/2.0 and ISO 100 yes.
At ISO 320 I don't think the A6000 would have excessive noise.
