Another great thread on lighting!

This picture was taken on an early morning at a nearby water preserve, where I found the tree reflections in water very appealing.

I like the little wading bird.

These were taken pre dawn on the grounds of the Audubon Society in north Greenwich Ct. A thin sheet of ice is suspended from the points of contact. Apparently the temporary pond had frozen over and then drained away. I was careful to keep my distance, not wanting to disturb anything, but preventing me from getting position. This was not a planned outing. The barn out of which I was working, had lost power, and I was on my way back home.

Ah, so you get water like reflections without the ripples or waves and a bit of an unfocused haze look to the reflections.
I don't get much chance to see ice in the wild here in So. California.

The splashes of yellow/gold look like Koi near the surface, is that light colored rocks?

Yes, they are just rocks Robert.

I'm enjoying this topic and thread, so... Here's an example of the recurring unfortunate difficulties with reflected light I face in my day job as a real estate and architectural photographer.

Hey It makes it look like an office full of work stations, and all the workers seem to look alike.

That image has some possibilities with the infinite repeating scene.

Well I will leave everyone to play with each other until about 430 or so (pacific time), I am attending a class taught by a canon rep that will go 3 hours and I need to get ready and get there early to get a good seat. Besides the camera store sponsoring it ordered something for me and I need to check to see when it is arriving. If I luck out it will be with yesterday's shipments they just unpacked.

Undulations in a solid sheet of ice is, at least in my experience very unusual. I was trying to document that. This particular day was one of the coldest I was ever outside with a camera. So. California, Joshua Tree in particular is among my very favorite places.

#1 is river ice. Shooting almost directly into the full suns position, therefore the darkness of the ice.

#2 an unusual happenstance of pond ice, snow and rain followed by freezing temps

#3 I had been following this school of little fish around a city park pond for a long time. Big pond, and the fish were in no hurry. Eventually the light was such that the thin ice developed a sheen.

The grandson "reflecting" on his young life and the odds of catching anything.

This is an interesting topic, and I immediately thought of this photo that I took a couple of years ago. I named it, "Cannot Separate". I was actually across the street from this church at a Starbucks when I spotted it, and I grabbed my camera from my car to go get the shot. It was a late afternoon reflection of the flag and its' pole on the church window.

Very nice and appropriate to the topic.

OK
Personally I would have used a longer lens to get him in closer. I realize this gives a feeling of isolation but I don't think it needs that much.

Very nice as is.
I do keep thinking "What if this or that was different." and it is too bad the entire flag didn't show.

Robert,

Thanks for the reply. I was more concerned with all of the reflections, etc. in this picture. My grandson was a bonus. It was taken with a P&S that wouldn't have brought him very close.

Thanks again,
Ed
