I'm a long time user of DxO (PhotoLab) and I also use PS CC 2018. Long ago I bought NIK filters, when you had pay for them. The NIK filters are installed on PS CC and works very well. DxO PL has the new "Local Adjustment" tool. PS CC still has my NIK filters, including color effects Pro that works very well.
Just what is that DxO is trying to sell me?

They are stating code improvements, bug fixes etc., although I'm not seeing too many specifics, yet. Perhaps they need to do a better job on communications. The free version seems just fine for now.

At minimum, support for NIK. Thousands use it, hundreds will need some help, and Dx0 hasn't yet made a penny from it. Yet, they'll have to pay someone to sit and answer all those tech questions.

Same as the freebie but for $50.

From what I gather, they have meticulously gone over the source code, did a lot of much needed maintenance, and provided better integration with DXO PhotoLab, which previously did not play at all with plugins. They have also fixed bugs (which I have never encountered in my use), and made it compatible with the latest versions of Adobe software running on the latest versions of Windows and MacOS. From a programmer's point of view it's a very substantial first step. I don't feel bad for those wanting to see new features immediately. Those are the same folks that are likely to complain loudly when something doesn't work as advertised or like they think it should. I give DXO a lot of credit - their plate is overflowing with stuff they have to deal with - the last thing they need is to release a new version of something that hasn't been completely vetted, then have to deal with the complainers.
I will download the upgrade this weekend when I have some time to mess around with it.

I like and use DxO a lot. I'm just looking for good reason to toss them another $50, other than I'm a good sport.
I paid the $49 in support of the NIK development. I liked NIK from the beginning and was hoping that Google would keep developing it. I'm glad DxO bought it and is cleaning it up. I'll keep supporting them.

It already ran on the latest windows and adobe and I have never seen a bug. What I got from the press release was that Dx0 and Nik now work together. I am happy with the free one.

A service stream and new function. Do you really think the free will work forever? How often do we read I'm using free app A, updated my operating system and free app A does not work?

We have also had a related experience with paid apps. Just like the rather expensive NIK software that became free, we just roll with the punches and look forward instead of back. I believe $50 is very reasonable for this software, to be paid today or when the free version stops working, or never.
Choice is a great thing.

There was at least one bug for me. Each plug in would crash photoshop cc (2018 -release 19.1.4) for me when I was done editinf in Nik.. I saw on a forum that if I went into the settings>"after clicking ok" and set it to "apply the filtered effect to the current layer" it solved the problem. The default which is "apply the filtered effect to a separate layer" caused the crash.
Others and DxO note that the DxO version of the Nik software has been upgraded to work with all target operating systems.
As best I can tell at this point, this version has not added any significant functions or features, just more compatibility. This step seems most appropriate so that the software now works on all newer machines.
That said, I note that when I upgraded my laptop computer to Windows 10, the Google Nik Collection loaded and functioned as intended.
So, for now, I see no necessity to buy the DxO version.
I await an impartial technical assessment of this software.

Probably fixing issues you may not have experienced and getting the api's up to date for current operating systems so that it will work as new ones are released. Don't know for a fact, but often times when companies pick up a dead product like this they offer it at a cheap price and it includes future upgrades at no additional cost. Where if you wait until later the cost of the software may be considerably more. I have the old NIK loaded on my PS, but I find that Topaz Studio has significantly more capabilities, and is a stand a lone product that is free and comes with 10 free adjustments. You might want to check it out.
