New Nikkor coming on the FedEx truck
Well, after two weeks of agonizing and reading reviews and staring at it on my B&H wish list, I bit the bullet and ordered the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G for my D7100 and FedEx promises it for Monday. It’ll also work on a full-frame if I ever upgrade in that direction. Any Nikon users with this lens? Did I make the right decision? (I don’t shoot sports and the only wildlife I photograph is my dog who’s 17 ½ years old and so slow now that I could photograph him with a Daguerreotype). The only other lens I have in that range is the very useful DX AF-S Nikkor 18-140 mm which is much slower and limited to crop frame.
At least this is not a big brown truck post. Enjoy, but your questions should have been asked before buying.
This is a lens that I have on my list, also. As I just bought a new D7200, my budget may have to wait a bit. Please let me know how you like it once the FedEx truck arrives.

Enjoy your new lens and create some awesome images with it.
If I may ask what was your "justification" for purchasing this particular fixed, short portrait lens? Nothing negative, just trying to learn on the whys of various lens lengths? I have a 50mm f1.8 and the 18-140 you mentioned. Thanks.

It’s a short portrait on a FX Nikon. On my D7100 it’s a moderate telephoto. I went by the reviews. It’s fast and sharp and primes are usually better.
I bought it used on eBay years ago .. sold it 2 years ago for cash to a guy at the Hilton Hawaiian Village .., I was shooting with another lens and had it in the bag ..ran into another photographer and said ..”hey.. want to buy a great lens ..” .. he said what have you got .. I said a 85mm 1.4 .. used 5 times ...mint .. sold it for cash $1,000 on the spot ..
It’s not that it wasn’t a fantastic lens .., it was that I never used it .., it was tack sharp ...
So many sellers list .. “I never use it” .., It just sits around ...when Big Brown delivers it ..put it on your 7100 and play ....you might be amazed ... then post some shots ....love to see ..
Enjoy the lens ....
I use the 85mm f1.8 quite a bit, probably the third most used lens behind the 18-140 and the Tamron 150-600.
I love it for portraits - did my son's senior's and it was great. It's super sharp
and not very large. It gets the most use on indoor sports, mainly volleyball, hockey and basketball. It works
great on flowers and butterflies etc. You will love it!
Just recently bought the 85mm1.4 canon. Jury still out on usage. For portraits, my 70-200 still gets a lot of time on the camera when in controlled studio lighting situation as I can move around zoom for 3/4 1/2 head shots and the workflow is optimum. In normal use, tried it indoor for Vball and Basketball and performed well. In the end, for very specific artistic/portrait situations it is killer(it has IS so low light is awesome also)...otherwise, I find myself going to the 50mm1.4 or staying with the 70-200.
Let us know how you use it....love to hear your feedback....
I recently used that lens on some pet photos. Very sharp. Could count each hair on the dog. You will be happy.
I own the lens and use it primarily for portraits and for flower pictures. It is very sharp, fairly light weight, and can create some great images. I bought it for my D7100 and use it both there and on my D810. It is a nice lens to have in your bag, and one of the best for portraits. Enjoy your new lens and use it to create images you want to share.
85mm is my favorite portrait lens, good purchase!
I have the D version and it's quite a nice lens. I love the results I get with it. As for whether you made the right decision or not, only you can answer that one.

I have that lens and I love it for portraits.
Considering the reviews and the price you can't go wrong. It's a prime and it's fast.
