When I was leaving for my hike a mama woodcock and five or six little ones came sneaking up through the garden. The babies flew to a patch of ferns but mom seemed to know she could hold my attention while the kids made a clean getaway. Taken with a Nikon 400mm lens and D810.

Must be fairly uncommon to get a shot of a woodcock. Congratulations on a good one!

Nice! Is that a speared slug on her beak? Wonder if the babies share snack, and otherwise how she'd get it off? We have close relatives here in spring, Wilson's Snipe, which you have to admit is a cuter name

Beautiful shot. Seems unimpressive until it sneaks up on you when you view the download.

Thank you Drip Dry Mcfleye, they like soft wet places where they can probe for worms but that is the first time I saw them right at the house. But we have had a LOT of rain lately.

Thanks Linda, that is a leaf she speared while probing for worms. Wison's Snipe is a cuter name however sometimes it's those close relatives that can cause problems!

Thanks Fran they are not uncommon if you spend much time in swampy places. It surprised me that they nested by the house where it's fairly dry.
