I've tried it several times, to try to find the multitude of 9/16 wrenches that I've dropped over the years while putting docks in, along with the occasional pipe wrench. I've found old anchors and several lures, but never my freaking wrenches.

Funny. I never heard of that. So if you have a 500-lb-pill magnet, you would need a very strong line and a very strong man at the end.

When I used to row out to place and remove my buoy at the beginning and end of the season, I would tie string on my tools, just in case. I also used cheap tools, just in case.

Yeah, I actually put a 3/16 piece of clothesline on them, and tie them to my wrist. for some reason, I end up taking it off, like the line gets twisted and kinked, or I need to move something. I set it down, and next thing I know, there is a plop in the water.

We have a place that is a discount tool shop here in town, and Every spring I stop in and buy about 5 individual 9/16 wrenches at a time. The weird thing is, with a 500 lb magnet, you would think that I'd find at least one wrench or especially a large pipe wrench that couldn't have floated far from where it fell, but seriously, in 15+ years, I've never found any of them.

Actually, the line just has to be strong enough to hold whatever you are trying to pick up. I have gotten anchors from the bottom of the lake, and several fishing lures.....just never what I really want to find. (my tools)

We have a sandbar on our lake, and I also would love to get an underwater metal detector. My guess is that there are rings and coins, and other fun stuff aplenty out there. We call it "the hillbilly yacht club", and people will pull up on their pontoons and drink all day......and never leave to go to the bathroom. Funny, the water is always 10 degrees warmer there. Hmmmm

You would need a strong line.......never know what the magnet will latch onto..
you never know what folks have lost in the waterways or delibertly thrown there...
if you check those canal videos, you'll see them pulling in motor bikes, bicycles, etc....
and, around docks, you could find all kinds of things that folks use on boats...
even motors, fishing poles, etc....and, around fishing piers, they lose tackle, knives,
pliers, etc....

Meh, not as much as you would think. Remember things feel lighter when supported by water. the anchor doesn't feel heavy until it breaks the surface.

Sometimes the item may be too big and stuck on bottom...then, if the rope isn't heavy enough,
you lose the magnet...LOL!!

My cousin is a diver and he would dive in the 50 to 60 foot waters of the large lakes here. It seemed that 'weekend boaters' most often had there anchors on 50 feet of rope and many times failed to tie them on and he would collect them and sell them to the marinas around the lake that would in turn sell them as 'used anchors' to the weekend boaters. Others he would find were hung up and the ropes had been cut and they were abandoned.

It gave him something to do that he enjoyed and provided most of his weekend beer money for the summer.

Trust me, I don't know where they get "500 lb pull" but 1/4" rope will be strong enough to actually pull the magnet off the item, you just have to move the boat enough to the side to break it free. I think 500 lb is literally in perfect conditions, with completely flat and clean iron,

If it were really 500lb, I'd never get the magnet off the things I find. You may be shocked, but I'm not that strong.

Most of these magnets are thrown from shore, so you don't have the option of moving a boat.
And, I saw where there are 1,000 lb. magnets that they are using and two 500 lb. magnets
at once......here's the videos I'm referring to and they have 1,000 pound ropes tied to them, I think.

OK, maybe on your youtube videos, but we've done it for years from a boat in both rivers and lakes, before the term was even coined, we just referred to it as "dredging" we just used a 500lb magnet instead of hooks. Used whatever decent rope we had, anything around 1/4" on up. Only time we would lose magnets is when we used rotten ropes that we knew better than to use. That's exactly how I've lost my own anchor, using the same rope for too many years. Same concept, same result, just with covering a LOT more area. Grab a drink, put the boat on idle and put around all the fishing/swimming holes. Been doing it the same way for years. We also do it with Kayaks.... Some youtubers just tried to make it look like it is something new.
