Windows Photo Viewer Problem

So here's what's happening: I shoot in RAW + JPEG fine. In Windows Photo Viewer, with SOME of my photos, when I select one, it shows up briefly in its JPEG file and then immediately switches itself to the RAW file. So if I want to send someone the JPEG file, I can't select it anywhere. All that shows is the RAW file, though I know the JPEG file is hiding in there somewhere. How do I get to it? Incidentally, for most of my pictures, this is not a problem (I also use Lightroom, but that's not what I'm talking about here. It's just the Windows Photo Viewer.)

If you shoot both, as in creating files A123.jpg and A123.RAW for the same A123 image, just copy the images from the card into separate folders based on file type. Then, go into the JPEG folder and access those files. You'll find there's no "magic". The file with the extension "jpg" will not flip around.

For photos already on your computer: go to File Explorer (file manager?) and at the top of page for "view," select Details. Click at the top of the column where file type shows, and you will have sorted your images by jpg name, then by raw.

Now create a new folder and select all of one file type and drag to the new folder.

Thanks. Just what I needed.

And thank you, Linda. That is also what I needed. I should have remembered that.

View Hidden files in Windows Photo Viewer

1. Press the Window Key + E
2. In the window that appears, select the View tab in the top left-hand corner.
3. Locate and click Options on the right-hand side or click the down arrow and select Change folder and search options.
4. In the Folder Options window that appears, select the View tab.
5. Locate the Advanced settings: section of the window.
6. Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files, folders and drives.
7. Click Apply, then OK.

If you do not want to see hidden files in Windows, select the don’t show hidden files, folders and drives option in step 6 above.

Don't use Windows PHoto Viewer. Don't shoot raw + jpeg - shoot just raw. If you need to send someone an image, just export to email (its a preset in Lightroom). I never use WIndows Photo Viewer. Instead I use Faststone Image Viewer and Irfanview - both free, both better than WPV, and both can handle simple raw conversion and some light editing.

No point in trying to make really bad software work. Better to use something that actually works.
