I hope this doesn't cause tension, and I know its a personal choice, but I'm just looking for suggestions.
I'm about to buy a 70-200 f2.8 lens. I've rented the Tamron many times and like it. I have friends who shoot professionally and they're suggesting I lean towards the Sigma.
As I tend to over-analyze any big purchase, does anyone have their own suggestion/preference?
Thanks
Rent the Sigma,then decide.
Yeah, thanks, that's on the todo list...I'm just looking for other input from those who may have used both over the course of time and prefer one over another. But thanks.
...I've owned Tamrons...I've owned Sigmas...I've kept Sigmas.
I had the Tamron and loved it. I was photographing a college soft ball game. The ball was high and to center field. I had the lens on the fielder while the ball was high in the sky. by the time the lens focused on her she had caught the ball and thrown it in. So I sold it and bought the Canon 70-200, which focuses much faster. The Tamron worked great for everything else. I do wish I would have kept the lens though.

As far as 70-200mm F2.8 lenses go, the current Sigma is BU FAR the oldest design on the market and quite outdated compared to other offerings. The industry has been awaiting the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 SPORTS lens for about 1 1/2 years now but Sigma has been extremely quiet about its release so far. The Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 VC G2 is sharper, faster focusing, quieter, lighter, and better built than the current Sigma. But the could all change when the Sigma Sports lens finally hits the market.
I don't believe it's valid to make a general statement that Sigma lenses are better than Tamron lenses, or vice versa. In some models Tamron will be better, in others Sigma. Just my opinion.
If you own a Nikon, buy Nikon. If you own Canon, buy Canon.

If as you say you over analyze any big purchase how will you analyze the responses??
I have a Tamron f/2.8 and a Nikon f/2.8FL. If you're looking for suggestions – I highly recommend the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 FL. It is vastly superior in my opinion.

I chose the Sigma, after trying both. The Sigma is beefier, but it's AUTOFOCUS worked more quickly and the OS actually made a difference. My cameras are Sony A mounts and have in-camera stabilization, but Sigma recommends turning the in-camera off ( also off on a tripod) The, Tamron, IMHO, is prettier and a bit easier to handle, but i preferred the Sigma. Also, you could look to used, with KEH, Adorama or B&H Photo Seller warranties or Squaretrade and Asurion after-market warranties, preferably drop/spill/. As these are awkward heavy lenses. You could save money and lose a lot of light by buying f/4 versions. Have fun....
If you own a Nikon, buy Nikon lenses for it. There is a very good reason for this which Nikon doesn't share with either of the manufacturers you've mentioned. The secret is the glass.

Just to add to the mix there is a new Canon 70-200 (2.8 and 4) announced today. I have the previous f 4 iteration and it is my go to lens on full frame walk around.
