After all hedgehog suggestions I'm thinking a canonsx40 would be a good transition right now. Any suggestions of where to get the best deal or hints on the camera would be appreciated

I got mine on Ebay for $339 w/free shipping... (new)... A good low milage used one will go for 2 +... Something tells me that with the popularity of that camera prices are not going to go down, and even maybe up a tad...

Check out your local WalMart as well. They were running it for $359.00. You do get to touch, feel, play with and buy with instant gratification! Also you can return it within 2 weeks for a full refund if it isn't to your liking.

I know that Best Buy also carries it, but are usually higher in price than many.

Ebay seems to have good prices as well, lots of reliable sellers with good feedback.

Bottom line the warranty is via Canon. It is a really good camera, I really like mine!

I got mine at Walmart. Here they are selling at $379. I chose to buy local instead of mail order for a puchase of this size. Good choice, but then there are many good choices depending on your needs. I am very satisfied with the SX40 and find that with its articulating screen I never have to worry about not seeing the LCD.

Just make sure you get it from a reputable store to make sure it is of good quality and not a return, etc.

Sx230, but I was thinking dslr because I miss my 35 mm rebel with the telephoto. But after thinking realistically, I think I only need a little step up for now

Start with lots of practice holding it steady, especially at the longer zoom ranges!! I just took a couple pics of the moon tonight and it took me a few minutes to find the moon after I zoomed out!! Filled the frame!!

Hand held with a little over 3x digital on top of the 35x optical!!

A fantastic and affordable reference book is available at www.shortcourses.com You will want (duh) "A Short Course in Canon SX40 Photography." It is well worth its modest price.

I bought mine last year and am just getting really comfortable with it. I dont like the fact that you have to stand far away from an object to zoom in on it but I am enjoying the camera. also, some of my pictures (especially in sunlight) seem washed out. another learning curve to get through. I had an old HP that I used for macro pic's and still do as it takes superior photos, but it is very slow. you will enjoy the fact that the battery power in the canon lasts forever! and it is a very fast shooting/focusing camera. I like mine alot now.

i am a slow learner as well so I found this camera difficult to learn as it has lots of features that I am not familiar with. I dont understand the basic terms of photography either so that makes it more difficult but if you have some photography background you will be just fine with it.
