Amazon has lots and so do most hardware stores https://www.amazon.com/Premium-Gaffer-GafferPower-Available-Multiple/dp/B00GZE3UJ8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1528201082&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=gaffer+tape&psc=1

I also use white, which is nice to use when taping white vinyl or paper background.

The most important difference is that the adhesive does not (usually) leave a residue. But it has a strong bond.

It holds up well; I use it to wrap some hardware for gripping.

My favorite trick is to roll some around an allen wrench (hex key); provides a larger grip for spinning out bolts.

Thanks. I actually thought I started off with the adhesive difference, since it is probably the most important difference. The adhesive on duct tape is semi-permanent while gaffers is designed to be removable. Of course this is probably why gaffers is more expensive.

I think a camera video store would be the most likely, my first check would be B&H but then that's "my camera " store

I bought a roll of Gaffer’s Tape from B&H - it has many thousand uses. /Ralph

I realize this might seem like a dumb question to some, but I'll ask anyway. I hear photographers talk about using gaffer's tape for a number of things when they are out shooting, so I would like to know what it is. Is it the same as masking tape or the blue painters tape? If it is a special type of tape for photography use, where do you get it?

Gaffer tape is one of those things you should never leave on a Photographic trip without. Just like a Towel in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It comes in a wide variety of colors and widths, sticks to a wide variety of surfaces and most importantly, leaves no residue. You put duct tape on something that is in the hot sun and see how much fun it is to remove.

A Gaffer is the Chief Electrician on any film or video set

My top use for Gaff tape:

I have several zoom lenses where the focus barrel creeps if it is on a tripod pointing up or down. A small piece of gaff tape secures this in place, which is critical for a 90 minute star trail shot.
Cover your viewfinder if you are doing an exposure > 2 minutes and do not want light leak to ruin the shot.
I've taped strobes to railings, secured lights to stands if the mount was broken, and cover my camera's logo to obscure it from would be thieves.

I always have a few rolls around, yes it is like duck tape, but it does not leave any residue behind! I use it amongst other things for stacking filters, when placing several grads, because a filter holder can't do that!

There is one crucial difference between gaffers tape and all the others; gaff tape won't allow light to pass through it. You can make flags and snoots out of it for your flashes. If you try that with duct tape you will bleed light right through it.

I buy mine from Amazon.

Make sure you are buying the real stuff, not wanna-be gaff tape.

Gaffer Tape gets its name from the film industry, The Gaffer is the Chief Electrician, the tape is used by the Gripps to temporarily hold cables etc in place, when I worked making movies (1960) it was Duct Tape, but now it is Gaffer Tape? I am old

It is very nice duct tape. Except it is vinyl instead of poly coated and it has a nice non-reflective matte finish. It comes in various colors but black seems to be the most popular. You often see it being used to hold down extension cords at events.

Thank you.

The biggest difference between Gaffer and Duct is the cost!!!
It's pretty expensive to just waste on something that black Duct tape will be just as good at, or electrical tape etc.
Yes, it IS nice tape if it's what you really need. The only thing I see photographers use it for is to put on their camera so they don't get scraped up, or cover the labels because they think an extremely knowledgeable thief will think their 1Dxll is a Nikon and not steal it!!! LoL

No, the biggest difference is the adhesive. Duct tape will leave a residue when you remove it. Gaffer tape was developed to tape cords to the floor or other structures, and then remove them without leaving a sticky residue. Duct tape was developed for use as the name indicates; to seal ducts. Put it up, leave it up. Not designed to be removable.

Thanks. Is it something that would be available in stores like Walmart or would you need to get it through a camera store?

My local store, Roberts Camera, carries it. You can buy from them online as well.
