There is a topic that has run for a couple days where the OP wants to know how to learn Lightroom. Responses are all over the map. One post called Laura Shoe the "Lightroom Queen". Laura lives in Oregon. Victoria Brampton lives in England. Most suggest that all Lightroom learning has to be free. Wandering randomly around YouTube should do it.
I thought it might be fun to start a different sort of topic. What do you really have to know to start using (the computer and file based) Lightroom Classic CC?
My all time number one "Basic" is:
Nothing is actually "IN" Lightroom. Importing into Lightroom means only that it registers, in a "catalog", where image and video files are stored on your computer.
What is yours?

I don't use Lr, just Ps CS6 alone!
Number 1 thing to know is start at the beginning and use the Adobe basic tutorials. Don't be afraid to try things - your file will be safe and you can always hit the reset button.
The number 1 thing for a new Lightroom user to learn? Do not be afraid to try new things. Just because you've always done it one way, open your mind and try another.

If you are just learning, do not mess with files or folders outside of Lightroom.
So, Mike, your number one basic rule is to use CS6 and ignore Lightroom? That's pretty good!

Yes! "Non-Destructive" Lightroom can't, won't and isn't going change your original files imported from your camera.

Yes. There are ways to fix it if you do, but it is a lot easier if you don't.
GO SLOW and look before you click.
Learn the organization part first. For me it was the most uninteresting and I dove into the "fun" part-the develop module. Big mistake for me. Learn the import and filing procedure to avoid a mess.

I guess they don't have Internet or mail to England - I live in SC and use Laura Shoe Lightroom training courses. Downloaded from the Internet and got the CD's in the mail.

Yes!
And the two most important rules - equally important - are:
1 - Don't move files around outside of LR (already mentioned, I know)
2 - Don't use more than one catalog file. (And always back it up!)
Violate these rules and you will quickly become an expert at finding lost photos! Which is not as much fun as it sounds.

Agreed. A lot of posts, complaints and requests for help are from users that violate those two rules!

Agreed.
There was a guy here on UHH a couple years ago that became the go-to UHH member for Lightroom advice. (I'm sadly forgetting his name). He disappeared briefly, came back for a while, reported being sick, then disappeared again. His advice was always spot on.
One of his common suggestions was to pick a couple dozen unimportant image files, import them into a catalog and learn the Library first and then the Develop module. He would say that once you are really sure you know how the Library module works it was OK to open a primary and permanent catalog.

Laura Shoe is one of the very best.
In another forum sponsored by Adobe she wrote that she nearly quit when Adobe decided to do the product name changing. It was a huge burden on her and others in her league of trainers had all their work messed up. Wherever they used or wrote the word Lightroom CC, it became wrong. It had to be changed to Lightroom Classic. Wherever they wrote Lightroom Mobile, it had to be changed to Lightroom CC.
