Poor quality image. Enlarging it just shows a larger blob of an emblem. He has a rifle, so it must be military, rather than a club of some kind.

I just received this enlargement. It has an E, and the family is from Ireland. It's too early for Elizabeth Regina.

The difficulty is that many made their own versions of the "uniform", often delineated by location or even clan.

Looking at the gun, it appears to be a musket, or at least a flintlock. This dates it better than the uniform does - many regiments in the British army wear ceremonial uniforms similar to this to this day... I took the attached in 1980, in Cardiff. This was my band, but I was released for this gig to take photos...
