I'm thinking I will need a grip for my a7rII. What are the drawbacks to getting a vello?

You'll have money left over compared with a Sony grip, and you'll have to find a use for it. : )

Seriously, lots of people are using third party grips successfully. On the downside, it might not fit right, might not work right, and it might drain the battery. If so, you can return it. Ken Rockwell had a recent review of a Vello grip, and he liked it.

I have a Vello grip for my T1i and really like it (a few years now). I saved much.
I would have no qualms about getting another for another camera.

Vello or others .. “you get what you paid for” ... if you want to mount that to a Tripod with a big zoom .. good luck ..if you use the copy grips and hand hold ..then you really can’t tell the diff ..works fine ...I still use a Vello on my old 7100 ..but had to fill in the gaps with a poured liquid rubber to take up the slack ..now it can handle the larger zooms ...my D800E ..810.., and the now 850 .., have all had the original Nikon Grip ..

The biggest drawback other than the wobble .., is the thumb wheel screw that mounts the grip to the bottom of the camera ...the internal parts break after a while ...especially if you are always over tightening the screw to stop it from wobbling when tripoding the thing ..I know .., my brother and I have gone through a total of 3 of them ..oh and on one .. the battery door latch broke off ...!

My logic there was the 7100 I bought for $400 acquired a $38 Grip .....my $2700 - $3700 Nikons got the real Nikon grips ...cheap camera .. cheap grip ..etc.

the Vello grips are one of the more expensive third party grips and I really don't think they are any different than the rest. all seem to be about the same in build and function. I use a Neewer grip on my Nikon D7200 and it does everything fine. 35.00 vs close to 100.00 for the Vello. I have a Neewer grip waiting for my D500 to be delivered. got the camera used for a steal so the free Nikon grip didn't happen. I agree that I would not put it on a tripod with a long lens, but I wouldn't do that with any grip. I have used it on a tripod with short lenses without any problems.

Did you check out buying it used from BH Photo, Adorama or KEH?

Had Vello grip on T1i, worked just fine, but rubber started coming loose around grip after about 2 years.

I had one for my Canon 5D Mark III and it lasted just over a year and then died. Simply died.
