Photographic tours in or near Chicago

I will be in Chicago in November this year. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding one-day photographic tours in or near Chicago. I'm particularly interested in street and urban photography and would be also interested in one-day excursions to shoot natural beauty in or around Chicago. Thank you.

November can be both beautiful or miserable depending on how early in the month you arrive and how early our winter starts. Other than architecture boat tours on the river that runs through the skyscrapers downtown, I'm not aware of similar formal tours through the urban environment. You can shoot me a note when you have more details on your travels and the dates of your arrival draw near.

The science and Technology Museum is a great place. I would also recommend Frank Lloyd Wright’s home on Oak Park. Just about five blocks from the elevated train stop in Oak Park.

Check with UHH member “mallen1330” he lives in the western suburbs of Chicago, but is an architect and gets into the city often. He would be a very knowledgeable guide regarding the city’s beautiful historic architecture. /Ralph

For me the Chicago Botanical Gardens Green houses are perfect regardless of weather outdoors.

The lakeshore, even in November. Lakeshore Drive, check the houses, and certainly downtown. Greek town (you must go to a Greek restaurant. I suggest lamb). If you have time, the Museum of Natural History (dino skeletons, etc.) and the Art Museum are musts. If there's a good play on at the Chicago, get a ticket(s). Get a room at the Congress and request one overlooking Grant park.

A walk down the Miracle Mile (Michigan Ave) from the John Hancock Bldg for as far as you wish to go will give you an amazing variety of street, urban, architecture, characters, and more.

The Chicago Architectural Society offers several walks. On the walks they take you by (and in some cases, into) historic buildings and cite the significance of the structure. There is one walk that talks about where the stone that is in the building was quarried. My favorite view of the skyline is from the Alder Planetarium.

Don't forget to shoot the Chicago theater at night! It's a classic and a gathering place for other photographers hoping to catch the same shot. To get the best results, shoot several different exposures and merge.

Take a windshield tour of Lake Shore Drive.
It is beautiful from far north to far south.
You can see grant park, soldiers field, planetarium, field museum, Bucking ham fountian, lincoln park zoo, McCormick place, the river walk, science and industry and many more. Although, you won't be able to just get out of the car and take pictures.
1st snow is usually around thanksgiving so the weather will be crispy, great for a lot of vigorous walking.
Then hit the loop for an architectural tour, walk the mag mile. Go to the 95th floor of the Hancock (free) buy a $10 beer and look at the city.

these are all great choices. the problem is one day is not nearly enough. you can shoot for a week just in downtown. just be careful where you go. some places are not too safe with a camera hanging around you neck.
