HDR Photos From Australia

I have just started trying HDR. I May I was in Western Australia and I did two trips--one to The Pinnacles and another to Wave Rock. I took nearly all my photos with a tripod and the camera set to automatically take three exposures.

I think the result was pretty good.

The Pinnacles photo won first place and the Wave Rock photo won second place in our camera club competition last month.

I think you will also find that across the top of the rockface and around the leaves in the halo area that you have some chromatic problems as well. The halo is relatively easy to avoid by adjusting your software settings but the chromatic problem which often shows up around areas of contrasting dark and light is amplified in the HDR process and can mess up many pics. I usually open my three RAW exposures individually to adjust for the chromatic aberration before combining in Photomatix but even then it can be a real problem which can stuff up what are otherwise great pics. The wave rock formation looks a little subdued and grainy, what software and settings did you use?

I am not quite sure what you mean by Chromatic problem. On the top of the rock is a concrete barrier which is intended to keep people from getting too close to the edge when they walk on the top. Re the halo effect on the trees, what can I do to correct that? I used Photomatix on automatic setting. Also, I didn't shoot in Raw. I will try that next time.

Here is another shot of Wave Rock from the other direction. It is also HDR.
