My wife and I have decided to travel extensively in retirement. In the last several years we have been to Australia, New Zealand, China, south East Asia, Peru and Ecuador. This year we will visit Cuba and an African safari. On each of these trips I normally take 3 to 500 photos. When I get home I use Photomechanic to quickly review them and I typically transfer about 150 to Lightroom for editing and often a few into Photoshop for manipulation. The question that I have is what do most folks do with these pictures. Asking family and friends to sit around and look at 150 or more of your favorite photos seem quite intrusive. I have started to generate coffee table books using Lightroom Blurb or Apple books and this seem to be working. Any other ideas.

I was visiting a home recently where they had built a frame around a tv so it looked like a picture and had a slow changing slide show of their pictures running through it. If you wanted to look......fine. If not, also fine. It was pretty cool.

I agree wholeheartedly with Linda from Maine about the website idea...I started one a number of years ago on Smumug and like it. Often when friends ask about our travels I can bring them up on my phone or tablet....my wife and I also have a business card we can give a person so they can have something to refer to. Seldom do I try to sell images but we enjoy going down memory lane. www.OnTheRoadPhotos.smugmug.com

AFPhoto,

What to do with travel photos? My workflow is similar. My end results go two directions.

First is a gallery wall in my office. I made a set of eight frames that have slots that allow me to quickly slide 13x19 prints in and out. I painted the wall gallery gray and hung gallery lights from IKEA. After a trip I pick eight favorites, print them on a Canon Pro-100. I enjoy looking at them until the next trip. Sometimes I invite others to look at my prints but the truth is that there is not a lot of traffic through my home office.

Second is new to me. You write that you use Lightroom and Photoshop. Assuming your are on the $10 plan, you have Portfolio. It took me a full day to figure Portfolio out and I needed Adobe's Terry White Youtube tutorials to do it. Now I have a system, controlled by LR Classic, to put images on https://billsprague.myportfolio.com/. I've printed business cards with that link so when (rarely!) asked by fellow travelers, I can invite them to view my work.

A side benefit to the Adobe Portfolio method is that it works on anything, anywhere. If someone wants to see pictures of your last trip, you can use their phone, tablet or computer. Even newer 4K "smart" TVs can do it.

I checked out some of your photos on the site you provided. Very nice! Great idea.

I post mine online but I am working to make the a paying venture. I can say all my gear is paid for now by doing this. You said you take 3 to 150 photos? I can't imagine going to those places and only coming back with 3. I went to Badlands and pan handle of Nebraska and came back with 3000.
.

Thank you Duane I thought perhaps I was the only person coming home with thousands of photos...my wife and I were in Kenya for a 10 day wildlife safari last year and we each shot between 400-500 per day...I hate the idea of traveling 8,000 miles and wishing I had a better shot of the Cheetah chasing a tasty impala. 😄

I may print a few for friends that are included or have an interest but mostly just story them on the PC and view them at odd times but they are just taken for my benefit.

After post processing, I share them with people I met on the trip who often are clueless about how to take a decent photo, a surprising number buy a camera for a trip and can barely turn it on. I used to send individual DVDs, but now I post to Smugmug and share the link with new friends.

I use Proshow Producer for my photos and videos. It is a little expensive... but well worth it for producing the best automated video production for your BluRay or normal sized DVD. You can also get a free version to experiment with on your own without investing. One very nice feature is using the "Wizard" feature... which will produce a show of all your photos and/or videos automatically... using your preferred slide styles. Then all you have to do is to add music... some music is provided by Proshow... or add your own music. I've produced several "shows" and share them with my family and friends. It's a great way to store your photos/videos on a BluRay DVD and access them when-ever you desire. Great Product!

Create photo shows with Pro Show or a similar program. There is a wealth of pan and zoom presentation effects, animated transition effects, and soundtrack options. Shows can be saved as an MP4 file, put on a USB drive and plugged into any modern high quality TV for viewing. Go to Photodex.com to see what Pro Show can do for you. I have the cheaper Pro Show Gold version. The more spendy Producer gives more options to manipulate effects. I'm a big fan. The music tools and effects tools are very intuitive. Start with the Wizard or from scratch and modify as you go. It has hundreds of free sound tracks included or you can add your own from CDs or downloads. Lots of tutorials available on their website.

I like your book presentation of your selected photographs.

Another option: You could display your photographs on a monitor that presents a slideshow of them all.

An obvious option: Print and hang selected photographs. You could rotate these photographs from your collection, maybe with a theme to them.

That’s also what I would do.

I make a slideshow of the favorite pictures in each area of travel always identifying where the picture was taken on the picture. I then add a music background with music from the area. The music adds so much to the slideshow with picture changing with the beat of the music. When I travel with a group, I get their email addresses and forward them a dvd, stick, or the address to my utube videos. Sooo very much better than pictures in a shoe box. I try and never go over 20 minutes on any video slideshow per country.

Another idea is to select a dozen or more and have them made into a calendar. That way every month you can see one or two of your best or memorable shots.
